Should NATO recruit/train a Free Syrian Army using the refugees as the base?

Nope, they do not want to fight, they want to run away and try and force their culture on others.
Would be less effective as the US's attempt. NATO has no clue on how to train a fighting force.

They don't wanna get blown up from the air or be forced by Assad to blow their other countrymen up from the air. Yea, total bunch of pussies.

Brilliant Idea!
But the majority of the refugees are military-age young men, who have already deserted their country, and apparently their women and children. I doubt there's any fight in them.
Still worth a try.

Would be about as effective as arming and training the Syrian Rebels.  Most left with our equipment and started fighting with ISIS.

And I wonder how many are running away from Syria, simply because they want to live in Europe or the US? I mean come on, would you rather live in a desert full of goats and camels, or a nice European country full of European women and beer?

Sorry I got many different thoughts rolling around about this whole islam, Syria, Terrorist, muslim thing right now.

Here is the deal -- there is no recruiting here this is mandatory conscription. The news shows a significant number of these refugees are men between 18 and 55 who should be fighting to keep their homes and not running away. Train them, equip them and if necessary lead them right back to Syria to fight. The women, children and old men can stay in Europe and the US but a condition for this is the formation of battalions of men who will return to the fight to reclaim their homes. that's the offer otherwise live like animals in the camps in Europe and stay out of my country. Fight for it or suffer the consequences. This is doable and the US needs to make this a NATO priority now.

I'm disappointed in yesteryears' officers, who feel like 1000 civilian deaths are fine collateral damage for gaining some insignificant advantage. Were I a platoon sergeant in combat, I'd murder 100 men to save one of my own. You don't know history, you don't know the current situation on the ground, and you don't know me. You obviously don't give one fuck about the Geneva convention. And, like I alluded to earlier, you can't put yourself in the place of these people fleeing their bombed out homes. Who do you support? Assad and Russia? The rebels? ISIS? The poor bastards who were just living until their world was exploded?

I can't put myself in these people's position. Sir, you may be right and I agree with your statement that these men should be doing all they can to protect their homes and families. But it seems to me they are facing genocide. On one side, the Assad authoritarian government, and the other the theocratic ISIS. And in between, world superpowers are dropping bombs right in their laps. I don't think we disagree as much as we see the human condition differently. And yea, I'm intel. I'd never get a CIB.

You can't be that disappointed you keep re-enlisting. I support God the Constitution of the United States, my family and the American way of life. I do not like those who hesitate rationalize or excuse anything that threatens that including s bunch of limp dick Syrians who lack the balls to fight. If you have not figured it out yet I'm the guy who along with my company has kept thousands of soldiers and Marines alive on the battlefield - I made the body armor they wear. I'm sure you have been issued it as well so do not suppose to lecture me on what I stand for believe or support. I've lived the Geniva Convention on the battlefields of Viet Nam. I led a company of infantry soldiers in the jungles of Southeast Asia taking out the enemy and saving civilians. So don't lecture me. Finally, if the leaders appointed over you are that disappointing you should have the courage of your own convictions and take off the uniform and return the pay check. That would be the honorable thing to do.

The Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto were also facing genocide but when they were given access to weapons they fought - it was a fight they knew they would lose but they fought. You need to read your history... Perhaps these Syrians would have more respect for themselves if they would stand and fight. They might lose but they need to fight.

No. Those people would be as likely to end up fighting us as they are Assad and doing it with our weapons. Our attempts to train people in Iraq and Afghanistan have been miserable failures and I don't see that we would do any better in Syria. Besides that I am not sure that we are on the right side. Assad is not a threat to us and Obama's buddies in the Muslim Brotherhood, etc. are.

SGT Jerrold Pesz - Sergeant; Indeed "Assad is not a threat to us ...".

On the other hand, he is a brutal and corrupt dictator who is supported by terrorists.

Naturally it then makes perfect sense that - in the name of freedom and democracy - the United States of America should support him.

The unfortunate facts of life are that NONE of the three factions in the Syrian Civil War deserve the support of the United States of America.

COL Ted Mc -I am not at all saying that Assad is a good guy but I think that he is the lesser of the available evils. Having him in power is in my opinion far better than having ISIS or the Muslim Brotherhood in control of another country. As for supporting a brutal dictator we have a long history of supporting people like that when we think that they are on our side. Our efforts to impose our ideas of freedom and democracy on others have rarely seen any success and many people in the world don't want our form of government.

SGT Jerrold Pesz - I'm with you. If Assad isn't a threat why did we get involved in the first place and why the ridiculous threat with the Red Line that was as empty as our national bank account?

MCPO Roger Collins - Master Chief; You ask some really good questions.

One possible answer would be "Because the US government was actually attempting to do, in fact, what generations of American governments have CLAIMED that they were doing when, in fact, those previous governments were simply supporting whatever regime promised the most financial rewards for American investors and glossing it over with claims to be acting to promote freedom and democracy.".

That answer, of course, is not well received in "polite company".

74% of the refugees are men and they are leaving their home countries for Europe. The free Syrian army is a small percentage of those who are fleeing
