In my kids' school, they were taught cursive writing first.

It used to be. Remember the writing pads for cursive.

I think they should but my daughter's second grade teacher is not smart enough to understand 'regrouping' is at times the same as multiplication and inappropriate for second graders. My daughter's principal has a policy of taking away recess when young kids are late to school, school age children that have no control over their arrival to school. Until some schools have better staff, I think cursive is out.

Cursive writing is a basic skill that everyone should have, just how do You even do something as simple as signing Your own name without it ? Its also a lot faster than printing and losing the ability to write is a major step backwards. There are still times that handwriting is called instead of the impersonal computer or even written printing. (assuming they will even have that skill much longer) In My opinion no one but a complete idiot would suggest people not be taught handwriting .

I am sorry that they stopped because writing helps the brain remember important information and it is something that gets better with practice (remember practice sheets) so virtually anyone can do it.
