Should a SPC stand at ease for a CPL? Should a MSG stand at ease for a 1SG? Should a SGM stand at ease for CSM?

I don't know Army, but.. don't you only wear the diamond when actively in a 1SG billet? So won't there be points where a very senior MSG (who used to be a 1SG) can interact with a very junior 1SG?

As for the SPC/CPL thing... I still really don't "get it." I understand it conceptually, just not emotionally. Why the hell should two people get paid the same when one is doing less work.

Edit: Marine Corps is completely different. MSgt/MGySgt & 1stSgt/SgtMaj is separate promotion path, and don't cross back. We don't have SPCs so that part is moot for us.

They should stand at ease until the individual gives them permission to stop and relax. They are in the "position" of the "grade or position" part of customs and courtesies.

Hmmm, it depends - then again I'm most familiar with the Air Force. Stand at attention when giving a Reporting Statement, Parade Rest is reserved for formations almost exclusively, and all other times when addressing someone of any rank...maintain military bearing :)

I came up in Group. I remember getting to my unit as a PFC calling SSGs and SFCs by their first name. There was a guy who came there from big army who was a SPC and told me "Where I come from, a PFC stands at parade rest for a SPC". Being an 18-year-old shithead, I just laughed. I also informed him he was a leg. I think people develop a sense of when they should, but at that high of a rank (E-8/E-9) I guess it depends on the leader.

When I transferred to a normal unit as an E-5, I led from the front, set an example, and didn't usually make people stand at parade rest when being addressed.

ok so i guess this is where i get so called undisciplined at; but i see if its say a pvt to sgt, then yes, but a spc and cpl, that is one ranking off so no i wouldn't

If the person holds grade or position over the other than the answer is clear, the questioning of this comes because we as leaders who set the example are not enforcing the simple standards.
