RP Community: Remember the "Good ole Days?" What constitues the Good ole Days for you?

I remember all of us on my block would open the fire hydrant and play in the water, buy ice cream from the truck, and block off the street and have a party.
I also remember the times I fell off of my bike and had to get up dust myself off, and keep on going. (because there was no crying) You would have to come in the house if you cried for falling.
I remember playing ding dong ditch and prank calling.
I remember hot coca in Chicago on those cold days we would use our toboggan sliding down the hills in the snow.
I remember the love from the neighbors during Halloween (thanks Mrs. Jackson for all the candy)
I remember the half an hour limit to the television. My father would say "go play your guitar and read your books."

Those were the good ole days!

You posted a great and harmless question SFC Private RallyPoint Member. With all of the other tensions being bandied about in the world and on RallyPoint it is nice to answer nostalgic questions which bring back good memories. I certainly hope many other people will respond.

I remember passing the hat for change to get a tank of gas to go cruising on Friday night.
Military wise I remember my first take home payday $111. Cash.

Rotary phones and snail mail. Family vacations. Military wise, reporting to the pay officer to recieve my paycheck and then going next door to the PX to cash it.

[Good ole days] I remember on hot summer evenings after playing stick-ball, that we would jog behind the DDT spraying truck because it was a little bit cooler and their were less bugs.
[Bad later days] With all of the false warnings put out about DDT which resulted in so many unnecessary malaria deaths and other mosquito born deaths.

Going to the 5 and Dime before an afternoon movie and buying a lot of penny candy to eat while watching the cartoons which preceded the main feature.
Once before I was a teenager I fell asleep in the movie theater and woke up to the "Loves of Casanova" or something with a similar title.
Nobody kicked me out because I was probably sleeping peacefully and I was able to walk the half mile back through the Philadelphia suburbs unmolested.

In the spring, fall and early autumn we would take unwanted sports cards and attach them to bike so they made what we thought would be a motorcycle sound as the cards flapped against the spokes. Probably sounded more like a moped :-)

I was able to walk to elementary school (in town); now we if we didn't live in post, I wouldn't even consider letting my kids walk to school (and might get arrested for it if I did).

"Good Ole Days" is whatever you grew up with, or whatever memories your parents or grandparents gave you about them growing up. Today will be the "Good Ole Days" for people 50 years from now.

I only point this out because I consider the present to always be the good days... we have a lot to be grateful for.

No communications until I set up the HF on traverses in Antarctica. Sometimes it's just nice to be left alone. Made sure to maintain schedule so they didn't freak out in Mac Town.

For me the good ole' days were back when my whole body functioned correctly..... I am not a combat vet, so do not give me the respect our combat vets have earned!!!!!

Now on a lighter side, The good ole' days were back when I was on the buoy tender, Sundew WLB-404. The ship was in some port almost every night while working a fall or spring buoy run on Lake Superior. The crew was pretty tight and while on liberty we all had each other's back. The MKC I worked for in main prop even ordered us to call him by his first name when we were in a bar/tavern! It was weird being a MK2 and calling my chief by his first name! Our crew worked hard, but I think we played even harder!

Back in the day when I was earning my first of two DD-214's, I seem to recall being paid in cash. Had to count it in front of the payroll officer.
