Being a good neighbor and helping when I can. Never trying to be nosey but trying always to hear the voice of someone in need. Great question.

The most important role is working with our community youth: I have been coaching recreational youth soccer since 2000; I've coached volleyball thru the Boys and Girls Club; I participate in school PTA/PTOs; I am a substitute teacher; I've been on the Board of Directors and a consummate volunteer for a summer swim team since 2004;

Citizenship and flag education. I spent July doing flag retirements at a scout camp (they collect lots of flags), and am scheduled to conduct a flag education session next month at an elementary school. This is done in my role as Americanism Chairman for my VFW post.

Like some of the others posting on his question, at this point in my life, I am pretty well limited to being the 'good citizen' whenever possible helping out a friend or neighbor (no heavy lifting), being a good family man and trying to maintain a positive outlook so I am not a pain in the neck to be around.

To carry on in civilian life as I did in military service. In fact that is what my community expects of me. I know because they comment about former service members who appear less than professional.

Modeling the great things we learned in the military and the character qualities that go with it. I do some work with a training and development company in Atlanta, and the compliments I get most often about my 'military side' are that I am reliable, and when I say that I am going to do something, I do it, on time and with quality. Other than 'thanks for your service,' it's the greatest compliment that I get that bears testament to what the military instilled in me.
