The 1099s and 1098&#39;s need to be filed if you received any, but these deal with misc. income, interest, dividend income and various other types. Also, if you received a state tax refund, you will receive a 1099-G that must be claimed on your federal taxes. (In short, you are taxed on your state refund. If you happen to pay student loans, the 1098-E gets you credit for the interest paid on them. Also if you had gambling earnings, those get a 1099 also. (1099&#39;s are moneys you earned and 1098&#39;s monies (usually interest) you paid. If you&#39;re itemizing, it can help, especially if you are dealing with properties and need to prove depreciation. The only other thing you might need it for is if you did receive a state refund and did not receive the 1099-G from your state. Without a proper W4, you may be paying too much, although if you are single with no dependents, you're probably not.</div><div><br></div><div>You don't need last year's taxes to file this year's taxes, but as others have commented, it could make it easier since you can use them as a template. Most bases have a free tax center that can help you as well.</div> Response by LTC Yinon Weiss made Feb 27 at 2014 8:18 PM 2014-02-27T20:18:46-05:00 2014-02-27T20:18:46-05:00 SGT Craig Northacker 91636 <div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Call me - you can get a copy of last year's return from the IRS-just fill out the request on their website.  The only time you need your 1099 form is if their is income AND withholding on it.  What you DO need is your W-2-which you can get a copy of from your Finance unit.  DO file an extension online for your personal income tax return (Form 4868) and also your state extension.  Let me know if you have any questions.  If you have your final pay stub, you can got to Vets-Help.org and file your tax return for free through that.  Good luck!
