Start now so you know what to expect. Your RE Code, characterization of service (discharge type) and separation code on your 214 will be scrutinized. You can look at AR601-210 Ch 3 to see how the Army looks at it. AR635-200 discusses separations.

Recommend also retagging your discussion to other than just "advice". Recommend tagging prior service ANG, recruiting, Etc. likely no one with the knowledge you seek even knows this post exists. He /she will be able to give you all the information that you need. One block on that checklist, at least for me, was the NG/Reserve Career Counselor. He'll get you squared away easily, if that's the route you wanna take. They are just saying active duty who they want can go straight in. That statement is geared towards active duty Air Force separating.
The reason more people don't try to get into the Air Force Through The Air National Guard is because there is no guarantee that the Air Force will accept you from the Air National Guard, just like there is no guarantee that the Army will accept you from the Army National Guard.
