People proud of themselves for speaking their minds? Good or Bad?

I know people who are very proud of the fact, "that spoke their mind and don't care what people think? But anyone who says may say things like that generally don't think before they speak and they are often wrong.
I think that we chose our battles wisely and do not esteem our opinions as necessarily transcendent over others. I have heard people say that from when I went into the service in 1974 up to today.
What is your take? Do we esteem ourselves too highly and do we take ourselves too seriously too often? Do NCOs or Officers have this attitude or this common in us all at some time or another? Present company include (myself)?

There is always a time and place. At times you need to bite your tongue and pick your battles. I tend to be brutally honest or say nothing at all and have learned to keep things to my self but ask me to give my opinion or back me in a corner you may or may not like what you hear. Runs in my family. It does have its upsides and its downsides.
