My son is stationed there and when I have visited him, I have noticed lots of family friendly events. If you are an outdoorsy type of person you will love it. The unit my son is in seems to always be in the field ( I always tell him it builds character :-) )

High optempo. Nothing in area to suggest other than gambling an hour south and hunting/fishing galore.
Great food everywhere tho.

I'm a Leesville HS Grad (Dad was stationed there in the 80s) and spent 5 years there a few years ago 05-10).
Polk is like anywhere else, it's what you make of it! I enjoyed my time there as a teen and my family enjoyed our more recent experience. It is all about the people! People you work with, people you leave near, and people you make friends with and do things.
I spent 4 years with the 10MTN BCT, including trips to Iraq and Afghanistan, and my final year training Combat Advisors. Everyone at Polk is busy. Either training others, or preparing for deployments or other missions.
Embrace it and ask specific questions about the area to your sponsor to get the latest and greatest.

I am born and raised in Louisiana, only about 1and a half from Polk. So for me it was great there. For some of my younger soldiers who were city folk, it sucks. No much to do around there outside of being outside. Lol. Truth

It's been a few years since I was stationed at Ft. Polk with the 2nd ACR, but I enjoyed my time there. Everything is about 45 minutes to an hour away - Lake Charles to the south, Alexandria more to the north. Lots of outdoor activities. If you are willing to travel a little, New Orleans and Houston are good weekend trips. There was a lot to do on post - Gyms, pools, clubs, etc. My kids all went to Pickering for school and were in Scouting. There was a couple of civilian sky diving and parachuting clubs near post. I worked on oil rigs in the Gulf and on the Intercoastal Canal prior to the Army, so I loved coming back for the Cajun food and seafood.

It's not bad as long as you travel to the other cities to see the sites. Great food.

At first, I made it a point to avoid Polk (largely OC/T Duty). But I've actually warmed up to life in 2-2 Infantry. Dudes have legitimate shots at going to schools, leadership opportunities for younger Soldiers and a high volume of training time.
