I think when you look at the overall bracket there were some great movies and much like March Madness; some favorites were tossed early leaving to several upsets. When looking at these two; it's hard to just pick one as the "best". Both movies give an interesting view into the military of the time in which the script was written. Heck, I know people that though Full Metal Jacket was only about Basic Training because they never watched past that. Patton gives a few of one of the best commanders to ever lead Soldiers into combat. While his methods were sometimes questionable, Patton got the job done.

As far as which movie do I think is best right now on this day?? I'm voting with FMJ.

Of the two, I choose Patton for the overall picture but FMJ has the best DI Scenes of any movie.

Ok, I looked at ALL the choices on the brackts (BOTH sides...) If you are going to put down stuff like "Tropic Thunder" and a couple others, they missed one of the BEST movies of all times.... wait for it...... "Stripes" 1981 with Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Warren Oates, P. J. Soles, and John Candy

Both are worthy choices but I voted for FMJ because the cinematography was better in my opinion. Both moving, both well acted, FMJ a little better visually.

I vote both, as they are both great movies in a different way. I think though that FMJ is more hard hitting and gives you a gut check about war that Patton did not delve into.

A fan of Full MEtal Jacket but only for the first 20 minutes when R. Lee Ermey is on. But Patton is truly awesome and legendary.

I have to vote for Patton. While the first half of FMJ is legendary, that's about it. Once they leave bootcamp, the rest of the movie is throw away, irrelevant. Patton was great all the way through..

A little tough. FMJ is fiction, Patton is real (not sure the movie is a true as it could be).

FMJ after Parris Island was weak. The Vietnam scenes were lame at points.

Neither would have been my choice. The Longest Day would have been. The cast was awesome, it was done with real respect to the troops that fought. Covered a lot of great bits of the landings and drops behind lines. Good perspective from the Gerrmans too.

FMJ/Patton would be a coin toss for me. I will give it to Patton because fact is almost always better than fiction.

Patton.

I love FMJ, but the fact remains that Patton is a biopic (with certain liberties taken) that helps demonstrate the audacious leader that he was and help establish his story with those who watch it. We can all take a little something away to help us be better leaders.

However, FMJ was amazing for portraying a certain image that, while possibly a bit over the top, helps put many humanized aspects of service into the light. It wasn't all glory. It was almost the exact opposite and it showed the emotional turmoil and stress that can be experienced in a military career.

There is no way you can compare these two movies. Both are exceptional movies with storylines about the same subject but different eras. They are both awesome movies and should not be compared to each other.

Seen and liked them both but I have to go with Patton. Perhaps the greatest motivational move he ever made was using his calf's leather gloves to slap a soldier he considered to be a coward. I have much respect for R. Lee Ermy and what he did in the Marines and since he became an actor, but Army dies hard in me and Patton, well, just Patton.

Now I want you to remember that no bastard made Patton by dying for his country. He made the movie by making Full Metal Jacket die for his country in the second half.

Patton. Great movie throughout.

FMJ still has the best beginning of any military movie. Close second is Gunny Highway's jail scene in Heartbreak Ridge: "Be advised. I'm mean, nasty and tired. I eat concertina wire and piss napalm and I can put a round in a flea's ass at 200 meters. So why don't you go hump somebody else's leg, mutt face, before I push yours in."

Shout outs to We Were Soldiers, Hacksaw Ridge, and Wind Talkers. Just watched those this past weekend. Some of my favorites.
