Part 2 - Leaders have you asked this question - If I could do just one thing for you as a result of this discussion, what would it be?"

This is a follow-on discussion to the first question I posted earlier on RallyPoint:

"Leaders when was the last time you asked the question - what can I do to make you more effective?"

Have you had this discussion with your team? Will this make a difference in your leadership or the way your team members will perceive you as a leader?

And of course the discussion that you are having with any one individual or the team will dictate what that one thing might be they need and in all instances you may not be able to deliver - caution use this question when you feel you have a resonable chance of delivering!

These are some frequently asked questions that great leaders have asked, but they may not be right for you. Test them out to see if you get the desired responses you are looking for! One size doesn't fit all and this may be a question you don't want in your tool box, but for others and based on their leadership dynamics and the situation it may be appropriate.

You may not agree with the question at all or want to rephrase it to befit yoru style of leadership - that is your choice!

One thing I always wanted (and usually got) from my senior leaders was to play guard to my quarterback. Especially when it came to me fulfilling my responsibilities as Information Assurance Manager at my last command.

No I have not had that discussion. I would want my subordinates to grow professionally so they can have a better understanding one level up.

@COL Mikel Burroughs I never had to ask this question; because, I had a great rapport with the soldiers I led in general. They tended to have frank discussions with me when it was appropriate. While being respectful they would suggest good ideas to improve the unit teamwork and sometimes specific ideas about individual improvement which went along the lines of training or specific experience.

Show them the best way with a series of probative questions designed to steer the individual in the proper direction. There is more than one way to accomplish a particular task. A leader shows the best way to achieve a goal. The best way is not always the easiest way.
