Get everything lined up on the receiving side with paperwork and their approval that they want you. Then approach your current Career Advisor and complete DA Form 4856 - Development Counseling Form. Once completed, contact your command and request a transfer using DA Form 4187 - Personnel Action. Having done the research and as much paperwork as possible before talking with your commander will speed up the process tenfold. They will send a few papers up the chain for your release, and once approved you will be able to be transferred. Took me 2 months from the time I contacted the unit, to get an official conditional release date.

Again, do as much personnel research and work BEFORE contacting your unit. It will show that your are serious and that the receiving unit wants you. They cannot deny your request at unit level, they have to send it up, to which higher command could possibly deny it - highly unlikely from mine and others I talked to experiences.

If you are active duty, I am not sure the official process.

Best of luck Nicholas Schrader Thu, 08 Jul 2021 16:14:36 -0400 2021-07-08T16:14:36-04:00 2021-06-28T15:37:15-04:00
