Orders to Italy next month. Is a passport needed to buy a prepaid sim card in Italy? Will my military ID work instead?

Not needed if your going to Sig they sell them on the base but you can buy them at the airport when you land

I would assume your military ID card would work since I think you can buy those pre-paid sim cards at the NEX on base.

If you're headed to Naples, you can get prepaid SIMs and phones in the Support Site and Capodichino Exchange (Vodophone Store). Family and I have used them for about six moths. Pretty happy with the price and the service. Don't recall that they needed a passport, but definitely a couple forms of ID.

Nope. You can go to any cell phone store and purchase a Sim card with a drivers license (at least that's how it is in Naples)

You can buy a Sim Card anywhere. Don't give them your military ID card if they are going to make a photo copy of it. I used my passport for that. Its been over 8 years since I've been there. Pisa rules may be different than Napoli rules.

Yes your military ID card is all you need. Passport is helpful if you want to travel while in Italy. I got in an argument at an airport in Canada trying to get into the US for official travel and the dumbass at the checkpoint tried to stop me. I told the guy you may not like it. But my MIL ID card is all I need to pass that checkpoint. His superior shot his crap down and let me pass.

Some countries will not except the US MIL ID card but most around Italy will let you travel within their boarders.
