Order of Magellan

Has anyone other than me ever heard of this award and if so do you know anyone who has earned it? Be honest now. What do you think the odds would be for someone outside the Naval community to have this honor bestowed upon them?

2 Qaulifications Circumnavigated the World. I did it in 91 During Desert Storm/Southern Watch/Fiery Vigil but you have to be a Distinguished Individual. Which I will never be (Except maybe in my own mind).

I honestly hadn't thought I had heard of it until I looked it up. It is an award that I had heard and read about but forgot about because I didn't think that I would ever be able to achieve it.

I am assuming you are talking about the unofficial Naval award rather than the Order of Magellan which Wiki says:

The Order of Magellan is an honor bestowed on distinguished individuals who have circumnavigated the earth and who, over the course of their career, have contributed to the world of science or the environment or future progress through peace and understanding. Among the pantheon of winners of this award are Douglas MacArthur, philanthropist and mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary, ethnographer and adventurer Thor Heyerdahl, Dr. William Walsh[disambiguation needed], who started Project Hope, oceanographer and underwater archaeologist Dr. Robert Ballard, oceanographer Jacques-Yves Cousteau, and astronaut and United States Senator John Glenn. The Magellan Award is the highest award bestowed by the Circumnavigators Club,[1] founded in 1902. The honor is named after the Portuguese born explorer, Ferdinand Magellan, who is widely known as the first captain to sail around the world—though he didn't complete the circumnavigation as he died during the voyage in the Philippines, that being the Spanish navigator Juan Sebastián Elcano, who took over command of the expedition after Magellan's death, and completed the trip.

The US Navy Order of Magellan: From what I saw on the internet, the Captain of a ship or boat may complete a certificate for all crew members who have circumnavigated the globe aboard a ship or boat. I saw no reference to aircraft. There was no special qualifications other than having proof of making the cruise around the world.

To answer your question, if you are referring to the Official Order of Magellan, you do not have to be a part of the Naval services. Military and civilians have won the award.

For some reason I earned it back in 1998 after the Around-the-World Cruise on the Stennis. It may have something to do with Slick Willy pulling all of the UN weapons inspectors out of Iraq in January as well as the Stennis' maiden voyage, but I can't think of any other reason why I was awarded it.

It is still used by The US Navy to this day. I earned mine between 3 January and 30 June 1987 while serving aboard The Good Ship Kitty Hawk.
