It's really sad that my first sergeant was in a supposedly permissive area of afghanistan. He was one week away from coming back off of active duty. He was my first sergeant with Delta company 426 civil Affairs Battalion before being split up into provincial reconstruction teams throughout Afghanistan. The Story Goes that he was in the same command vehicle as the commander and that vehicle got hit by a svbied with accelerant fuel so not only did it blow him the bits, it burned them to a crisp as well so those who went to his funeral at Rose Hills Memorial Park in whittier, observed a closed casket. While deployed to Iraq in 2004 and 2005, I went to about four ramp ceremonies. We lost three males and one female from our 116th Cavalry Brigade, Idaho Army National Guard. I don't know the names of the Fallen but some of you do this was during oif 3 and 4.

First sergeant Blue Roe died during Operation Enduring Freedom. May they all rest in peace. I will never forget the ramp ceremonies that I attended at kirkuk Regional Air Base in Northern Iraq.

I served as Master of ceremonies of the Veteran's day observance in the town of Millis, Massachusetts and We read the name of every Veteran that passed form the last Memorial day in 2022 to the current 2023 ceremony. First a historic bell is rang and the name for the Veterans spoken along with the branch of Military service and what war He or she served during. One of the veteran's name read this year was My Father's, ET1 David R. McCarter, US Navy who died on 12 May 2023 and served in the Pacific during WWII, was there for the occupation of Japan and also served during the Korean War. He was also a member of American Legion Post 208 along with Me. The recent list included Veterans of WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Our American Legion Post 208, Millis, MA also each year places new United States flags on the graves of ALL the veteran's buried within our cemetery. The are assisted by both the Boys Scouts and Cub Scouts who also along with other community organizations march in the parade and attend the services

Those cohorts who we lost remain in my heart and mind almost daily, but this year I was invited to speak at a local ceremony and expanded my remarks to include the first person I memorialized throughout my life. That person was my uncle who I never met who died in WWII. When my Dad died we found amongst his effects all the letters my uncle had written home and the official notifications and letters after his death. In today's world of instantaneous communication and prompt in-person notification, it was striking to put together a timeline that occurred; his last letter arriving weeks after the telegram notification and the letter from his CO advising of the circumstances under which he died weeks later. All very sobering and impactful.

I mainly remember every year the eight men we lost in a mid air accident in the Indian Ocean on our way to serve on the Picket Line during the early days of Desert Shield. These men were ones I had worked with and served under, and searching for them and their aircraft as dawn broke will be with me forever. I honor all who gave for our country, all the way back to our first days as a nation. These eight stand out to me. I tell the story to someone every year to keep them alive in my heart.
