Are 2nd LTs and 1st LTs authorized to live off post at Fort Hood if they are single?

Are 2nd LTs and 1st LTs authorized to live off post if they are single at Fort Hood? I am in the middle of a disagreement, and it is striking me that there is chance I am wrong. If I am wrong I would like to know so I stop standing on my fake soap box... My niece is dating a newly commissioned LT that will be on his way to Hood in the next couple months. She wanted to move down there with him and live on base. I explained you can not live on base unless you are a dependent, meaning married in this case. She came back and said they are going to be living off post now, but they will still only be dating. So, can someone help square me up here?

Honestly, without contacting the FT Hood Housing Office, I am unsure. What I found for Hood on militaryonesource states "On Base/ Off Base Housing: Residing in on-post housing is voluntary, not mandatory, except for personnel assigned to key and essential positions, as designated by the installation commander. In-processing through the housing services office is mandatory."

So, if the Housing Office states the LT can live off post, then they are G2G. But, if he is required to stay on base per whatever key position assignment he may get, then your niece isn't moving on base.

I recommend calling the Hood Housing Office to confirm. Their number is [login to see] . Their hours are Monday - Friday: 7:30 am - 4:30 pm

I can't tell you specifically about Fort hood, but I can say that most large CONUS bases will require that all officers receive BAH. Some large bases offer single Soldier housing, like Fort Bragg. The only place you'll see junior officers required to live on base is OCONUS in the officers quarters.

I am glad I did not have to serve there. Killeen is a bustling community that not always the best. Is a large instalation, so you might have more options than not.

It ultimately depends on what housing says but, in my experience, family housing on base is for single soldiers with dependents or married couples with dependents. Maybe even married couples without I'm not sure about that but generally on base housing is family housing. Single soldiers without dependents who are allowed BAH generally live off base.

I don't think I've seen any single soldier without dependents who can get BAH live in on post housing. Exceptions exist sure. But generally, no dependents you live off base.

I tried to see if Ft Hood had Bachelor Officer Quarters (BOQ) for permanent party. Doesn’t appear they do. If they did she would not be allowed stay beyond a short guest period that would be set by the GC. If it did exist, it would be a dorm room with a kitchenette and a bathroom.

The Army has gotten rid of BOQs in all but a few places. I lived in BOQs at Irwin once upon a time.

If they dont offer BOQs or the officer we ts not live in them, then they are down town in a lease or home/condo they buy.

I do not recall ever having any restrictions on who could live with me while a single jr officer. Some places may have a max number of days for guests and most rentals I have been in required the names of those living there but never really saw it enforced. Never saw BOQ in my 18yrs commissioned.

All soldiers can live off post so long as those who are required to live on post maintain their assigned quarters. Also, if assigned quarters, they will not receive BAQ nor Separate Rations, with one exception : Commissioned Officers will receive Separate Rations. Most junior enlisted and junior NCOs unless married will not. At least those were the rules when I was serving.

As a current officer station here at Fort Hood. I was authorized to live off post and given BAH with little to no effort. I am however still on the wait list for home on post. Been on the wait list for 8 months now… since I’m single solider with no dependents I don’t have the highest priority.

A Junior Officer would get BAH and live off post.

If an Officer isn't married, regardless of his rank, they have to live off-post and will receive BAH. If they are single with dependents, irrespective of whether they live with them, they would be authorized on-post housing. When I was stationed at Fort Sill, they allowed LTs to move into the old Field Grade quarters when they built the new ones. If they want to live on-post, they will have to get on the waitlist; it can take years if they don't have a dependent. I always recommended that they live off-post and try to find another responsible LT to be their roommate to cut costs.

It is likley that he will draw BAH and is normally not authorized barracks. Many bases are moving single NCOs and junior officers into on base housing, in that case your niece would be out of luck as I am sure she would not have fluid access to the base.

If you are concerned call Hood yourself and verify. Hate for your niece to get there and have there dreams beat down. Be a great uncle check it out.
