NCOs, Writing up an NCOER--the SGT has gone to NCOES right at the end date, add the school time, Ext annual, code S?

Doesn't the 1059 count as the NCOER? I would do the NCOER as an annual.

Unless the NCOER is needed for a near term board, or the NCOES was a school enroute to next duty station I would write it as an annual, with standard time frame.
An exception to that would be if the 1059 is a referred report, in that it has
(1) Any “NO” response.
(2) Any “UNSAT” rating.
(3) A “Marginally Achieved Course Standards” rating.
(4) A “Failed to Achieve Course Standards” rating.
In which case i would do an extended rating period and include the derogatory notations on the NCOER from the referred 1059

All that said, my information on procedure or best practices predates the latest NCOER version, so there may be updated rules.

If the SM is currently in school, the appropriate non rated code would be inserted in the period covered info section. If the completion date on the DA 1059 is after the current rating period end date, any bullet comments on the course would go on the next rating period NCO-ER.

You must have 365 days for an annual. Not 364 days. So the major question is how many days of rated time do you have? If 365 it is an annual. If 364 your options are: Do the "S" code and when they get back the one more day will close the rating period. If the rating chain is set to change you can do a senior rater option. If the school is part of a TDY enroute that would make this report a change of rater.

Thank you very much for the comments. The NCO has a thru date of April 30, and was in ALC from late March thru May. If there is room for maneuvering, it would be great to include the school time and reflect his achievements during this rating period. Extended annual, non-rated time for school?

No,
His/her DA1059 for his/her NCOES will be added to his/her record as the evaluation for that period. He/she will enter his/her normal rating period for the next evaluation, but that will include the DA1059.

Nope he has a 1059 to cover his school date. Just the NCOER to cover from the last thru date to the end date, use S code for school to cover nonrated time.
