Navy Chiefs often look down on Chiefs who cross over to the officer ranks. Are other branches similar? Why do you suppose this is?

It is common, for someone reason a lot of the non officers who have been in a long time do not like being under officers, a lot of those officers can be half their age with no experience, so that may be it. and I think the hate for that just spreads to all officers period.
I'd think if an officer had been a high ranked enlist before hand the hate for it would be less server but perhaps not

I never heard this on the Army side of the house, but to me it is a good thing for an enlisted to become a commission officer. I believe this would be a well rounded person who have a better insight of the enlisted personnel needs and their expectations. SCPO Nemeth, I want to share some top secret information for you, this Football Season coming up the Army will be the Navy. I don't think this is the case. We may joke each other a lot, but the reality is we are proud of our brothers and sisters that make the decision to lead in the wardroom.

I don't think all navy look down on Chief who cross over to officer ranks. From what I know and seen Chief respect all. But some times there are those who forget where they come from.

Spent 10 yrs in the Goat Locker before moving on to be a Warrant. I often stopped by the Chief's Mess for coffee. Heard a couple of "traitor" jokes, but it only gave me the chance to dish it back (as was expected). Loved my time as a Chief/Senior Chief and loved my time as a Warrant.

Nicholas, Congrats on your selection. Take care of your Chiefs like you did your LPOs and you won't miss a beat. You are no longer part of the Chief's Mess. Now you square away the Wardroom and those knuckle head JO's and junior (E-6 type) LDO's. Have fun!

I have great respect for LDO's and CWO's. It's a narrow path they walk, remembering where they came from but letting go of what they did. They were selected for their knowledge as well as leadership, but doom on them if they try to continue to be a Chief. On the other side, the wardroom is trying to teach them to be an officer. Learning to be an officer and understanding that the unit (platoon, division, detachment) is now yours but the personnel are the Chief's is hard, especially if the Chief has a different way of doing things. I had this conversation (many times) with an LDO I deployed with that had worked for me prior to going officer. I found that I had to answer more questions because he knew a lot more of the process than a Line Officer, however I had more firm support because he knew how to get things done, being a prior Chief.

Senior Chief, 2 things:

1. Ultimately it is your career, your direction, and your retirement check. Other chiefs looking down are the ones who are jealous, too hung on 'good ol' boys cliques' or have other internal issues many of which they may not even be aware of.

2. Your personal gut check comes into play. Are you going to fall for the 'cliques' or follow your heart? Do you (in general) realize that life moves on, that they will have to move on as well, and you'll be a better man as a result?
