I know the BAH more than covered my rent for a 2 bed 2 bath place. Housing on base wasn't the best so that is why I looked off base. There were a lot of new homes being built just up the road by the Applebee's, of course this was in 2006/2007 so I'm sure there is a lot more there now but I don't think you'll have an issue finding something quickly. I recall that the on post housing wait was 36 months (if a tour is 36 months, who is getting to stick around after that?). There is plenty of construction going on in the place, and I would suggest a look-see before you get there to determine where you want to live. Great assignment. Good luck. I don't know housing too well up there, but there is stuff for you to do. Lots of hiking, trails, ATV's, sport shooting, horseback riding. You'll be able to head to Tucson or Phoenix fairly easily, there's a fair amount of concerts and sporting events between the two though there seems to be constant road construction in Tucson.

It does go without saying I suppose but when you get here you'll find you need to hydrate more often, even in the Winter. Which it does get cold in the Winter so don't lose all of your cold weather gear. Senior enlisted housing on post is also available. I would suggest contacting an agent there as soon as possible and give them your range of preferences. Basically you can rent or buy in town or out on a nice spot of land. Very nice options available. I lived in Huachuca City (just north of post) as a child with military friends. My dad was a contractor employee and I saw a lot of the post then. I was stationed there upon my return from Germany and lived in post housing (very old homes, but well maintained). Upon leaving the service, I married someone I met there and found my way back. We lived in another housing area on post, but again old homes well maintained. Being in the community on these occasions, I've visited with people (my dad was also a part time pastor) across the Sierra Vista/Ft Huachuca community. If you have kids, consider whether you want them attending in Sierra Vista's district or in Tombstone's district. That will tell you whether to move further south, north, or east. The post covers the west. Good luck and enjoy your time there. The waiting list back then was 2 days. Not sure how it is now. Just a suggestion. I heard on base housing was upgraded (torn down and built new). Try to get on base housing and when you get to know the area, then you can see where exactly you would like to live. As others have stated, it is beautiful out there. I miss the mountains especially during the sun rise. Have fun out there, but be careful. Mexico is 50 miles south by car or 25-30 my walking.
