You normally do this at the end of your junior year for four year programs. Service academies are further in advance.

Does he know what field he wants to go into? Has he looked at tentative careers? Recommend he uses the Department of Labor career tools to see fields and occupations by region/metro area along with career projections for growth/non growth. That tool has education, certifications, and skills needed for each field. Then you can pick programs, and then a school for admissions.

Regardless of whatever he picks, he will need to fill out a FAFSA, federal aid application. Even if he doesn't get any, schools use this as the basis to offer things and to determine family needs (what you'll finance). All this is on line.

Check this SFL TAP related thread. I posted a ton of links, among the is the DOL tool I mentioned. https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/what-are-recommended-resources-for-veterans-to-help-produce-the-best-resumes-possible?page=2&urlhash=1219448#1219448

What are recommended resources for veterans to help produce the best resumes possible? |...

LTC Jason Mackay Thu, 15 Sep 2016 20:39:32 -0400 2016-09-15T20:39:32-04:00 Response by SGM Joel Cook made Sep 16 at 2016 2:38 PM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/my-son-is-about-to-graduate-high-school-who-on-fort-hood-can-help-him-find-a-college-and-figure-out-financial-aid?n=1898774&urlhash=1898774

Depends on how much money you have. My youngest son got a free ride 100% scholarship to Texas UT Austin. It was still expensive helping him with room, board, transport, etc. My older son went to Central Texas College for two years, got his AA degree then switched over to Killeen, Texas A&M. He did this while living and eating with us. For those of us who are not rich that is the way to go. So your student doesn't incur massive student loan debt going to a college that is no better than our local Universities. Once you pick the college go to the financial counselors office with your student. Your judgement is almost always better than you student's. Ask about Pell grants, then ask about Pell grants again, and again before every semester. Hope this helps you out a little. I do not know about any army/GI Bill transference stuff. But the easiest thing would be for him to go talk to his guidance counselor and get the paperwork or information on filing for a Pell Grant and the Federal Student loan program(Stafford) possibly any state aid programs, and decide on an order of 3 possible colleges or vocational programs. And do it, don't wait or rely on anyone to do so, he needs to find out and do this stuff now, during this school year. A few hours should be all is needed and perhaps a W-2/ family finances/earnings or release from you, plus the paperwork/online app being done in a timely manner.

By doing so now , he should be fine for have enough money in a grant and loans to pay for his first year at a public college or for educational costs(not living support) of vocational training.

Note if he has school preferences, he needs to contact those schools and talk to counselors there , they will have info on possible aid and private grants/aid particular to that school and possibly some Veteran programs for children of the same.
