Sgt Aaron Kennedy is correct, and you can do the entire procedure online if you have, or if you know someone, with a bit of computer savvy. I am currently going through the same procedure. It takes a while to get the records, about 6 to 8 weeks is average, but as long as it is not an emergency it shouldn't matter. Most importantly you will get your requested information.
If you have any questions you can contact me, I'll do my best to steer you in the right direction.Response by PVT Robert Gresham made Jun 23 at 2015 12:56 PM2015-06-23T12:56:31-04:002015-06-23T12:56:31-04:00SPC Jan Allbright, M.Sc., R.S.764774

Yet another link ...
http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/

Good luck in your search.
It's really quite painless.

I took a copy of my dad's birth certificate, a record from vital statistics, grandfathers death certificate, discharge paperwork and filled out paperwork and mailed it to the US Department of Veteran Affairs in DC. I would speak with a VA rep on what paperwork needs to be filled out for the request.
