I still remember back in 2005 in Germany, if you looked across our formations, you saw full BDU's, BDU's with tan shirts and tan boots and full ACU's. That transition period was an eyesore but we all learned to get use to it. I expect much of the same especially since the clothing and sales will have them at different times across the country.

I remember wearing my BDUs on the last day too. But now, we're facing three (+) different uniforms in our formations. Even with the switch to ACUs, some leaders had an issue. I'm curious to see if some teams will try and fight it. There is going to be essentially three sides to this. One will be the stubborn ones with current ACUs who won't spend the money until they have to. The second group will be the front runners with the new Scorpion pattern. And the last group, guys who deployed to OEF and received Multicams and will want to rock them for the next four years.

There will be some commands that will have the @ss about mixing and matching but in the end, the guidance from the senior military adviser is to not impose a burden on anyone. He is also setting the example by aligning the purchase with when he received his own clothing allowance.

If you want everyone to use the new stuff, then wear the new stuff. Some may follow. Maybe not even mention it or try a different tack: Ask you troops to get at least one of the new uniforms but stress that there is no requirement for them to do so. Sometimes just asking works.

Its just going to be like the days of when ACU's first came into being when there was a mix of BDU and ACU in formations.

It'll be a clustertruck like it was when you had BDUs/DCUs/ACUs and the myriad of combinations until the wear out dates were fully in effect. You will, just like always, have commands (CSMs), that will pressure there troops to "look more professional by getting on board ASAP with the new pattern" as it was with the ASUs and the cycle will continue. I do like the fact that the SMA has come out and stated that an undue burden should not be placed on the troops at least he is different than his predecessor in looking out for the troops, but we or rather ya'll will see.

How is this an issue?

When the new APFU came out to replace the IPFU, we had those onesies and twosies wearing the new ones while 98% of the company were still wearing the old IPFUs and no one batted an eye.

Likewise, we have roll out dates and a wearout date, and not only that, the ALARACT explicitly authorizes soldiers to mix and match uniforms and components thereof.

As SMA Dailey said, we wont all match but that wont make us any less lethal as a force.

It is an excellent idea. Some of us have more time downrage than some company commanders. We have many serviceable multicam uniforms. I am sure most people that dont get a clothing allowance can agree.
