Above getting a packet started try to find warrants nearby to talk with and get to know them. This will help when it comes time for recommendation letters. See if you can talk with some senior warrants W-4 or W-5's. We are looking for good men and women to become the future of our branch so if you need help please ask.

The son of the best high school friend of my mother in law, with whom I'd chatted at the 90th birthday party my wife and I had for her, when both the friend and the son were there, had a very interesting background you might possibly find useful to hear about. He'd been army enlisted, I'm not sure what rank, and got into warrant OCS at ft rucker, for helicopters, as you want. Then, he did the bulk of his bachelors in aeronautics through embry riddle Univ, and, when nearly done, being as he was apparently near the end of his army term, he petitioned to go interservice to USCG, at which point army agreed to release him if USCG would pick him up. So, he did the rest of his Bach under USCG, I'd gathered, or something like that, then USCG sent him to an OIS, rather than to their OCS, after which he finished out his 20 yrs as USCG. Now, he's a TV helicopter news pilot near where my wife and I are in long island (LI) near NYC. However, I just thought you might, as I'd said, find his story of interest. He didn't deploy, he'd told me, however, he'd been Alaska, assigned to USCG, and was mission commander on sevl fairly important flights, I'd gathered, from what he'd explained. I'm going to suggest something, for whatever it might be worth, if only in the hope that you might possibly have never considered it, thus far. In all honesty, I have no idea if it'd help your chances, however, I only offer it as food for thought, honest. Wherever your assigned, of course, there might possibly be a mil aero club at your installation. That being said, I quite freq kick myself for not having taken more advantage of the fact that there was one where I was, that I never really sought to use. You can get a good deal of aviation exposure by going for private pilot, I think, as well as for IFR, and multi engine ratings. Obv, how far you'd want to take that, to try to manifest aviation interest, only you could decide. However, if you could also go for commercial rating, possibly also helicopter private pilot, I could only see that as helping. You didn't go into how much educ you'd had, or your normal work type, however, I'd seriously look at http://www.uopeople.edu, not because it's a panacea. They charge no tuition, and have an Assoc and Bach in comp sci (CS) that, if you haven't done your Assoc or Bach yet, might be of use. Look also at http://www.excelsior.edu, formerly part of NY state govt, that privatized, I got a 2nd Bach in math from them when they were still under NYS govt, also, a friend of mine got his Bach in math through them, and went to an OCS using it. Very SVC friendly, long history with the svcs, regionally accredited, so far as I'd heard. Now, UoPeople isn't regionally accredited, though they just got DETC access, formerly NHSC, though I don't know how the svcs, VA, or industry view them, they also have Assoc and Bach in bus admin and health science, as well as an MBA. The good thing is, they charge no tuition, just admin and exam fees, prorated by per capita income for a given country, with their main ofc in Calif. So, I just thought you might find them of interest, that's all I'm saying, however, as I said, I have no clue if they're acceptable to the svcs, VA, or industry, I've just read good things about them, Excelsior I know far more about, of course, for the reasons I'd mentioned. I only suggest the mil aero club route, as well as possibly civil air patrol (CAP), and also the USCG aviation flotillas, as I'd read of means in there world to get private pilot training. I'd also read of a new drone flight program for army enlisted on here, wherein enlisted army are actually taught to fly before transitioning to drones, you might care to scroll back on here, you should see the listing of it on here someplace, or just look it up on Google. Then, too, if you haven't considered this as well, you might also think about FAA airframe and powerplant (A&P) programs, as further aviation orientation. My only point is that, the more you give those looking at you, the more you give them reason to reflect on your effort to be part of their world. I'd read for a long time now, or heard, that rotary wing flight is actually easier to master before fixed wing flight, as opposed to the other way around, though I dont know that for certain, I'd only heard that was the case, of course. Also, CS is an excellent major for aviation, if you haven't done your Assoc and or Bach yet. You might also look at commun college of the AF, or CCAF, if you haven't thus far, to see if you have enough SVC training or outside college, to be allowed an Assoc, certainly worth asking about. Hope that was of at least some use and or interest, I'll try to send more as I find it or think of it. I'd wanted to try for USAF nav training, and did go for med qual for naval flight ofcr, or NFO, and had thought about submitting for intersvc, though I'd never done it. USAF nav training, for some weird reason, insisted on 20/100 minimum uncorrected, whereas NFO allowed minimum 20/200, which I had, why, I never understood, as I'd always thought carrier qual NFOs might need better vision than USAF navs, being as USAF is mainly ground based, however, that was apparently not the case, for whatever reason, be eager for any thoughts or more info, if I can suggest more, I'd of course be most eager to chat, many thanks.

I would not recommend going directly to a W4/W5 asking questions any WO1/W2 can answer. Get all the stupid questions out the way with the WO1/CW2s. Then they can set you up with an interview with a senior warrant. Those guys are pretty busy. You need to have everything lined up before approaching these guys. Have a rough draft of a LOR ready for them, have about 10 NCOs and WOs review your packet for errors prior to talking to a W4/W5.

Bottom. Line. Have your packet ready. Before you go and jump and talk to a W4/W5

Good luck on your search. When I retired I was asked "If you had your career to do all over again, would you do it the same way?" I replied without hesitation "I would have been a pilot". I don't regret my time as a Military Policeman, Signals Intelligence Analyst, or Signal officer at all, but I would have preferred to be a pilot.

Find a Warrant Officer. Ask them to be your mentor.
If they see you're serious and potentially able, they will point you at the nearest WOC school.

Get with warrants that are in the field in which you are going into and fine out what all paper work you need to have. you also can get help from your local personnel office. good luck.
Ps My son was a E6 and he applied for OCS and which he went and he was honor grad he is going to retiring some time he is a Major.

Get a flight physical first...if you do not meet physical requirements everything else is wasted time and effort.

You want to get started here are the 1st 3 things you need.
1 You need a GT score of 110.
2 You need to be a American citizen.
3 You need to be able to get a security clearance.

Just go to Personnel where ever you are stationed and say you're interested in attending Flight School. They should provide you guidance from there. Good choice, by the way. . .
