Looking for a new rifle, what do you suggest?

I'm thinking about a new or used gun for Christmas. I want something that I don't have already, is versatile, reliable, and awe worthy. I would like to keep it around $1000. Suggestions?

I suggest the Ruger Gunsite Scout rifle, it comes in .308 WIN and 5.56 NATO/.223 REM. It is a bolt action with a 10 or 20 round detachable magazine. It has a forward-mounted Picatinny rail as well as a ghost ring adjustable rear aperture sight. Good all around gun. They go for about $1000.

The Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle, the one rifle to have if you could have only one. It is the perfect lightweight, hard-hitting, do-it-all bolt-action rifle.

AR10 is a great gun that can be built for that price range (minus optics). Simple, solid platform.

I'm not sure if it is or not. I keep hearing how it'll reach 1000, 1300, 1500 yards, but haven't had a chance to test it out.

The Army's new sniper rifle is a .300 Win Mag caliber after finding it more accurate than the NATO .308. The Marine Sniper community is asking for the change to the .300 Win Mag also.

CPT (Join to see) SrA Kevin Ridenhour .300 win has a much flatter trajectory because it has about "twice" the powder of the .308. Basically, longer range, accuracy at comparable range, or more take down power at same range. For a man/deer size target at 1k it doesn't matter. It's a preference issue. However, and I will pause for effect, you will have more wear & tear on throat & barrel with a more powerful round (long term cost).
Things to consider are how far you will actually be shooting it (will you ever get into the operational range of the weapon). Like the AR15/M16 platform, it's great to talk about the max range, but most folks will never see that 600~ number. So when we talk about an AR10, especially one with a 16" barrel, we're not really talking 1500~. Other issues are cost of ammo (not a huge issue, but something to consider). And things like recoil.

Something awe inspiring and versatile.........how about an AR in .300 Blackout, with a 16" barrel? Decent home defense, great for hunting, and won't break the bank when you're plinking.

I assembled an AR-15 in .300 Blackout with 16" barrel and am in the process of assembling another .300 Blackout. However, the second is as an AR-pistol with 8.5" barrel. I don't foresee much "need" for the AR-pistol, just a neat to have.

A fun yet very good weapon to add to a collection is a WWII Russian bolt action rifle. 7.62x54. Not very pricy and you have a functioning piece of history. Mine is dated 1942. Still functions and ammo is available.

GySgt Michael Salyers I don't know how great of a shot you are, your hunting style ( if you stalk, use a blind, or beat the brush). If you beat the Brush i would say get a leaver action 30-30 (big loop so you can wear gloves). If you stalk and are a good shot you dont need a great big bullet to take down your game so find something light i use a Mossberg MVP 5.56 with a 64 grain hollow point to hunt deer. I also use it when im laying in a hide waiting for my deer. If your not so great a shot you can go with a 30-06 and the deer will go down. You can get some good ones for less then 1k. I was reading on here about the 300 win mag, well let me tell you i have 1 it was a gift from my father in law, i used to think he liked me till i took it out to put a box thru it with my father and brother well after 18 shots my shoulder was black and blue for 2 weeks since then i have not fired it, im waiting just incase Brown Bears come back to WV and come knocking on my front door. Here is my half of a Nickel. I would suggest either a Black powder 50 cal and sabot it down to .38 cal if you wish.
or a nice lever action 357 Mag. This is what I will be using this deer season. This combo should be good out to 80-100 meters. Which if I have everything placed right that will be between 5 and 30 meter more than I will needed.
