I'm thinking about a new or used gun for Christmas. I want something that I don't have already, is versatile, reliable, and awe worthy. I would like to keep it around $1000. Suggestions?

I would get something in .270 win or 30-06 class, ammo is cheaper than most. Both are well priced in Remington, Savage, Winchester, etc.
I shoot Savage .270win with Nikon optics , and Savage .308 win with Vortex both sighted in at 100yds with sub-MOA. This year I shot my elk with the .270, dropped him on the spot at a 100 yds. Furthest shot was a buck at 350 yds and dropped him on the spot.

I think I'm going to go with a Weatherby either a mark v 270 wby mag or a vanguard in 300 wsm

I'll second SPC Fewell's recommendation of the the Ruger Gunsite Scout. I picked up a .308/16inbarrel last year and have really enjoyed it.
However... does the $1k include your optics or just the rifle? That may alter a few recommendations made by others.

Would like it to include optics but doesn't have to. Can always add a scope later

I have a Remington 300 ultra mag. Model 700. A very sweet powerful high power rifle. Will drop any big game in north America. You might be able to get into that rifle used for around a $1000. But if it don't have a scope on it then you have to worry about that. I would never go with any other rifle. Just my opinion boss. Here is a picture of mine.

That is a good looking rifle. I used to have a 300 ultra mag. Devastating. I now use my 300 weatherby and love it!

I HAVE A OLD REM MOD 700 IN .243 WIN THAT I PICKED UP FOR $125.00, BEST DAMN DEER GUN I HAVE EVER OWNED, HOLDS A 1.5" GROUP AT 200 YARDS. THE SIGM400 IN .300 BLK IS A NICE RIFLE.

Look at the Thompson Center Diminsion. Has 4 interchangeable bolts/magazine groups, and covers a total of 10 calibers. Shot SUB MOA right out of the box for me. had a less then 1 inch shot group at 300 yrds with 10mph crosswind.... covered all 3 shots with a dime at 100yrds. All calibers in each "category" use the same bolt/mag. A group is like the 223, etc, B group is stuff like 308, 7mm-08, C Group is like the 30-06 (if I remember right), and group D is 7mm Rem Mag and .300 Rem Mag. LOVE IT. Price is pretty good also for such a great shooter!

It depends on what kind of game you plan to hunt. I've hunted primarily western big game with a 300 Win Mag (Alaskan brown bear, Mt Goat, Dall Sheep, as well as black tail deer). I went with a stainless and synthetic stalk, which is lightweight and good for any climate. Mine (Browning) went for about $800.

I love my 300 mag. Maybe something in a short mag would do what I want. Just want something I don't have. It's getting harder to tell the wife what I want when I don't even know what it is I want.

For home defense, I have a New England, pardner 12 gauge loaded with #4 turkey loads so it will kill who I am aiming at and won't go through the walls into the neighbors house.
For the area I live and hunt, I use a Remington 870 in the 12 gauge model, I hunt deer, ducks, geese, grouse, and have taken it bear hunting.

12 gauge is hard to beat for home defense. Just the sound of a pump gun is enough to deter most would be attackers.

I try to be a conscientious defender. Don't wanna shoot an innocent who wasn't involved, is why I use turkey loads and it seems an appropriate load for a home invader.
