Looking for a new rifle, what do you suggest?

I'm thinking about a new or used gun for Christmas. I want something that I don't have already, is versatile, reliable, and awe worthy. I would like to keep it around $1000. Suggestions?

Deer mostly. But it's mostly just to have. Maybe black bear or elk. I already have several rifles. Just wanting something different

GySgt Michael Salyers - A .308 will kill all of those animals and will do it close or at distance and will shoot a 7.62 as both have the same brass diameter.

I've been looking at the Ruger American Rifle, myself. Cheap, various calibers, and has good reviews from magazines and friends of mine.

Need more info... What does it need to do, What are your expectations? What do you have now?

I bought an Axis in 30-06 and don't care for it much. It is accurate enough but the bolt action is less than stellar and the Magazine is a piece of crap. Savage makes great rifles but the Axis model is not one of them.
