Established in 2015, LEAD provides an opportunity to express our gratitude to the men and women in blue. In 2021, 491 police officers lost their lives in the line of duty: https://rly.pt/3fmr0Hh . As members of the military community, we are no strangers to the sacrifices made for the greater good.

Veteran’s Day is filled with many handshakes and sincere “thank you for your service” sentiments and LEAD should be no different. As Omicron tears through our nation, it is likely you may not come across a law enforcement officer this week but that doesn’t mean you can’t express your support. Consider a donation to the National Museum or Memorial Fund: https://rly.pt/3rlT5nq

The police have taken a lot of heat in the last couple of years. Calls for defunding, diversity and inclusion training and punishment for excessive use of force abound. As a community, this is something the military understands. The soldiers who returned from Vietnam were not met with handshakes and hugs, instead greeted with disdain and disrespect. It is easy to forget that the job of a soldier, and a police officer, is to protect others. There is always room for improvement, and that is true of all industries.

This week, show your appreciation for Law Enforcement by offering a salute, a thank you, a cup of coffee, a donation or even just kind words. Most local police have social media pages. Post your thank you, share a positive story or even get creative and make a video to tell the men and women keeping your community safe how grateful you are for their service. Coming from the wrong side of the tracks didn’t matter, they did their job but also that community policing we talk about now, many police knew us by name, they would jump out and shoot some quick hoops, jump rope, play hopscotch etc. they reached us all and dare I say saved many of us from horrible fates.
