Kerry to Congress: Don’t rule out U.S. ground war against Islamic State

"Secretary of State John Kerry on Tuesday asked lawmakers debating legislation to authorize the war against the so-called Islamic State not to rule out the use of U.S. ground troops in combat.

Kerry also indicated that President Barack Obama would prefer to wait for a vote on an authorization for use of military force (AUMF) until Republicans control the Senate."

So would do you think? Back to Iraq Part III or keep the status quo (air strikes, advice, and let the Iraqis clean up their own country)? Also, what do you think the motivation of POTUS to wait until the Republicans take care of the Senate?

MAJ Private RallyPoint Member, I think that our getting involved in a shooting (ground) war with ISIS is a distinct possibility. If the Secretary of State is asking for authorization to send ground troops, there's probably a good reason to believe it's "on the table" and considered a viable option.

As for waiting until the Republicans are in charge of Congress ... I think that's just good old fashioned politics. The President gets to play politics with it. If things go south in a war against ISIS, he can point to the Republican led Congress and the fact that they authorized the war. They get to share some of the "blame."
