On my way back from Fort Meade today, where some nut crashed a car he carjacked last night (so the post is essentially closed), I heard a report from Roseburg, Oregon. Some folks in that community are fed up and want to buy their own guns to defend themselves. And they don't want President Obama to visit if he's only coming to denounce gun owners and gun ownership.

I still believe in that right. It's a basic right, and if it gets taken away or severely restricted, then the crazies and the criminals will have an even easier time of it.

Think of the folks who live on Fort Meade today. The person who crashed the stolen car into a gate (fence?) at Meade reportedly ran ONTO (incredibly) Fort Meade to escape. I'll bet the Fort Meade residents who do not own a gun wish they had some way to protect themselves with that person on the lam, on base. Those of us who have served know the measures we had to take to insure gun safety even in a combat zone. I well remember halting each patrol before we entered the base camp perimeter so I could move to the front of the line and inspect each weapon to insure that it was cleared before entering. I well remember the discipline enforced on firing lines at training facilities in CONUS. Imagine all those "undisciplined" civilians carrying loaded weapons in a community. I was, like I said, concerned.

Then came the actual results. Sure there's some nutter here and there hurting themselves and others through careless handling of loaded weapons. But not so many incidents as I might have feared. Then I began to see the precipitous drop in violent crime in those jurisdictions. Concealed carry it turns out had a greater impact on criminals than open carry. Criminals simply couldn't know who was armed and who wasn't. This made everyone a potential danger if they decided to engage in criminal activity.

Obviously, we're not going to allow students in grade schools to carry weapons. They obviously don't have the judgement to handle them safely (well most don't and there are some adults whom I would trust less than some children I know). I would even consider restricting concealed carry to upper class members. I was just 17 when I entered college, little more than a child myself.

At least with some colleges taking the risk, we'll have a practical demonstration of how it works. Let's hold our breaths and await judgment...
