Just got to Fort Irwin a few days ago. Anything I need to be aware of?

Environmental: Hot as Hell in the summer, can get very cold at night during the winter. Watch out for snakes (rattlers and green mojave). Tarantula mating season is only a few months away. Coyotes galore there. The ravens you will see are huge and smart. They can pick apart an MRE better than a Soldier.

Base: It's been built up since my day, but still isolated. It's still a hoot of a base though.

Barstow: Avoid it like the plague unless you absolutely have to go there.

It's pretty much centrally located between Vegas, LA, San Diego. Just a few hours either way of a drive.

only went there for training twice... Hot and Dusty... Jumped in the First time and Air-landed the second time and never allowed to socialize with any one...

The glow of light in the far east distance is Las Vegas. Always stay hydrated, even in the winter. If you are looking to complete a degree, Barstow College has classes around the rotations. I spent many hours in the classrooms to finish my degree. If you go exploring, have a battle buddy and be safe in the desert. Don't mess around with UXOs or wildlife. It is very hot in the summer and your car will be hot inside too. I had to wear gloves a few times just to touch the hot steering wheel. Enjoy the area at Ft Irwin.
