My "pets" have always been a huge part of "family". Man may fool other men but man cannot fool a dog. Today I would be totally lost without my Layla who is my constant companion. We lost her buddy Penny the day after Christmas 2016 and we both miss Penny so much.

As a kid, they were my friend and constant companions,just as much a part of home as church, dad, mom, and both sets of grandparents. As an adult, they’re my kids. I don’t get to spend as much time as I’d like with them, but they’ve been with me throu a residency, a doctorate, 3 moves, 2 deployments, and welcoming my first (and now second) human kids into the world.
I don’t know I can really answer the question; the emotions are hard to put into words.
