ISIS posts 'Kill List" of 100 US Soldiers

With this latest threat, how concerned should the military be about its collective presence in Social Media? Are we going to see more attention paid to social footprints and OPSEC? Are more focused sites like RP a better option than the larger FaceTwit sites?

I am curious to see what actions the commands are going to take with this threat. I invite a discussion about this.

I want to see the list, to check for names that I might know. So if you have it the website please post it. Kind of foolish to expect to protect victims by not letting them see their names. I believe that the list was probably gained through Facebook and Twitter cross referencing articles on service members and matching names and locations. So please post. I advice all to check the names and if you recognize a name; apply We are our Brother's Keeper.

It would be interesting to see what type of knee jerk reaction they launch because of this. I'm certain it will be overkill. What would be better would be if they notify all of the 100 service members who were on the list and actually analyze how and where their information was harvested from, then devise a plan of action. That might actually have a chance of minimizing if not preventing it from occurring in the future. Due to the nature of social media it will never be 100% but it could be negligible.

As I've said on other portions of this thread, the list is comprised primarily of pilots, although there are some bomber Combat Systems Officers and a handful of higher-ups as well. It looks like they targeted airmen associated with the B-1 and B-52 platforms, along with some joint components (again, I'm assuming pilots).

Funny thing is I would think from an OPSEC standpoint, Facebook would be the worst site followed by Twitter. When was the last time MySpace was relevant? You Tube is a gray area. My company uses a you tube channel to put out promotional videos. I use you tube to watch videos. I can see why uploading a youtube video could be as bad for OPSEC as posting photos on Facebook. Ultimately it is the same as any other internet activity: If you don't want it to be a permanent record of an event, don't put it on the internet.

As for ISIS, I think the time has come to bomb them off the face of the planet.

Access to information can be easily obtained through public records and now with so many sites that compile information on people, removing yourself from a social presence will not do you any good. Once again, the military is hanging out back of the bus and behind the times. Origin of the problem, national security. Internal policy to revert back to self preservation and national attention to be payed to founding ethical framework. Civilizations that succeed are civilizations with a united moral and ethical perception. Information flow is not the issue, moral relativism and multiculturalist misconceptions are.

If members of the military are worried about attacks at home, you cant fight wars abroad. attention must be payed to our national identity and those who seek to infiltrate. This is the responsibility of all citizens.

I view it as another sign of just how impotent ISIS actually is, despite the propaganda. Most are Air Force, one is an Army tanker (They must be angry that he actually knows how to use their Iraqi paperweights) and the list is directed at no one in particular. They're just shouting into the wind and hoping some random person will do something about it.

As for Command, social media training by actual experts is recommended. I guarantee most of this info was gained from Facebook. Simple things like not having your address and phone number on it (even set to friends) and constantly checking authenticity on friend requests can stave off a bunch of problems. I'm guessing many of those service members either added a shill account as a friend or used an app/website that required access to their FB profile. It really isn't hard to drag an enormous amount of information out of social media without the person ever realizing they gave it away.

I'd never pooh-pooh a threat, no matter how seemingly trivial and desperate, but this does have a comedic element to it. But, then again, I'm writing this from the safety of my house here in the USA. If I were overseas I'd be more concerned, especially for my family. There are too many people out there that can't wait to be martyrs.

A bigger part of this is not the fact that they made this list, but the fact that they were able to put one together utilizing Social Media. Singling out military members, regardless of what branch they are associated with or what they do in the service. Of course, my 4 year old could probably do the same thing. Hell, she cracked the password to my tablet so she could watch My Little Pony on my tablet AND my phone. But that is besides the point...haha.

I understand that the DoD HAS to put out something, to inform the service members, 'Hey, this threat is out there, so damnit, watch your effing virtual footprint'. Whether it's a "hey, do your 5's and 25's or hey, don't post that stupid shit on Facebook!" I'm okay with it. I'll read and heed. But, let's also keep in mind that we, as a nation, of not only veterans, but as American's, who abide by our constitutional rights, and acknowledge those rights, and freely express those rights, we have a lot of trust in our people, and we have a lot of trust in our ability to make sound decisions.

This list is a threat...Let's not forget that part...the fact they took the time, effort, and an educated (to there level, which is like what, as smart as your local pet store animal?) effort to put this together...can, will, and has already impacted how WE as American Veteran's will have to operate. We know...We aren't dumb...We are like...Hey! Bring it on you no good, filthy effin, waste of oxygen breathing, dirt eating scum! But...in reality, I don't want to see ANY service member actually get hurt, or even feel as if they MAY be a target or MAY be in harms way. We have families, people that love us. That's the reason we are so damn strong. FAITH.FAMILY.FREEDOM.

Let's have fun with it...but also, let's not forget how we are trained. How we are supposed to be professionals, and we are supposed to be Ambassador's to our service we represent, and we are supposed to be the disciplined example to our fellow American people, who trust us, to protect them and their families too!

This could be some upsetting information. #2 and #3 do not surprise me as that is where the majority of their forces are currently. #1 remains one of our largest allies in the area, which is still strange to me (note for clarity: I find it strange that Saudi Arabia is our biggest ally in the area still, not that they support ISIS so much).

But the United States having such a large array of supporters within this sample size is upsetting, especially with the OP talking about calling for the death of these service members.

I'm a common computer user, it is apart of my MOS, but I don't get on Youtube or Facebook. I will admit I've used Rallypoint a few times. I don't use it because I feel it is safer, but because I feel it can be more educational on a professional level for me. I can use this site as a social network site, or I can use the discussion forums as an informative tool. I understand there are pros and cons to everything, but everyone has their own opinion.

They (DOD) have been telling us for some time to be careful on the www, social media etc. I would recommend you sterilize your social media site(s), just to be safe, if you are concerned. This site is particularly interesting, as we are all veterans here.

That said, let them come... They have to get through several obstacle belts, and then the FPF and FPL... and then the dogs, then the direct fire weapons, and we can finish them off the hatchet...

Commands will be reactionary for the most part. Presently the military and intel community gets more from social media than is at risk.

Remember too that a good deal of intelligence work has been outsources to private contractors greatly reducing what is performed by government employees or military personnel. Big Brother has lots of little brothers and the rules restricting government or military actions often do not impact the corporate players at all.

I believe for our current Service Members of the U.S. Armed Forces should be restricted from Facebook, Twitter, and other Social Media Networks for safety purposes. I think it is probably very easy for those of us who have "been there" to be quick to respond to this threat with, "COME ON DOWN, CLOWN!" Yea, it pisses me off to no end like it does most everyone else, but the reality is that IF their so-called ISIS brothers who live in America DO begin taking action, you can bet it will be in the form of something quite cowardly and will happen at a time, place, and manner in which it is least expected. The damnable truth of the matter is that there are probably several ways we could view this, one being that those Bozos are succeeding in encroaching upon some very basic freedoms which we have been taking for granted. But in the name of OPSEC, I certainly understand the measures taken regarding the social media. It is just a real shame that such measures would become necessary and must be taken. Although I possess my own personal fire arms and plenty of ammo, I don't think I'm ready to start answering the doorbell with my sidearm drawn and cocked, or to start going out to my vehicle in the driveway as though it's a movement to contact maneuver.

Perhaps if the Pentagon could glean the intel from DHS and other such agencies about the names and addresses of those in our country with ties to ISIS and publish a similar list to the American public with the statement "Take any action you deem necessary", it would be a good response to ISIS. But then again it would be silly make such intel public, wouldn't it?

So what do we do? Tough one to call. I think in this particular moment, restricting social media is too little too late because by now they already have the information and most likely have only published a small portion of it. But there is no need to give them anything more.

Recent efforts to ban certain ammo types couldn't come at a worse time, could they? Stay safe, stay vigilant, stay healthy, and keep your powder dry my friends.

As we are continuing to wrap our heads around this situation with ISIS, which has spawned from the Arab spring over the last several years I have to look back to history. I feel that the answer to the MIDDLE EAST is the "Marshal Plan". Europe torn apart led by a psychotic narcissitic bigot killing people right and left. Then pan to Japan where they were killing without mercy. We decided after the war to stand up bases and reform these countries. These countries were blown up by nuclear bombs and total destruction. Look at these countries now. The difference in the Middle East is OIL. Lets be honest Japan and Germany didn't have oil. Somehow we maintained somewhat of a occupation. Japan and Germany are 2 of the strongest countries in the world NOW.

I feel that if we look at some accepted norms in the middle east as alien we can address these issues. For starters women are beautiful, strong, and intelligent. By covering these women and denying them RIGHTS you are alien to this world. By disrespecting and destroying religious and historical artifacts like savages you are alien. Most of all if you kill and use death in a public forum to recruit you are alien.

Here is the ANSWER that no one wants to say out loud. Set up bases in the middle east and keep them in place until these situations stabilize which will take decades if we are lucky. If we don't invest for the long term we will be dealing with this all of the time.

One should always pay CLOSE attention to personal OPSEC. While deployed, we burned mail items that had our address on them, don't post anything on bulletin boards (the physical kind) that identifies you or anyone else....

Back home now that I'm merely a dysfunctional veteran, I have my Facebook pretty well locked down to the public. In fact, I wouldn't have one if I wasn't required to.
