I really enjoyed that tour. Good command, good people, along with the Canal Zone history and awesome beaches! There was no real "base" security-wise except for the ops building compound with the Marine Security Force. Family housing, barracks, the dependent school were all wide open to whomever wanted to stroll through. Panamanians would have softball tournaments in this big open field by our barracks every weekend. A few of us would join in regularly. Times were a lot different back in 1983-84....lol

Wikipedia photo of the old ops building from 2013, viewed from the access gate. While there was ample opportunity to spend money in town, the nightlife offered little.

It sits at the base of the Huachuca Mountains, which I found to be beautiful and provided endless opportunities for hiking and exploring. It was a hardship tour and I extended for it three times. My job was as Signal Team Sergeant a SSG/E6 position I went into as a SPC (P) I left as a SGT (P). I held that job for over three of those four years. It was in a heavy lift CH47 heavy lift helicopter company, 271st AVN Company, the Innkeepers. It was one of those dream jobs where every morning when I woke up I was happy to go to work and really felt like I was needed and appreciated there by all of the Commanders, 1SGs, and Platoon SGTs. After a while I got just about every extra duty that a long term soldier in the Company would benefit the company. I went to one of my Commanders with a request that he assign me an Aviation Officer Mentor so I could submit my Aviation Warrant Officer packet. Which I did and on my last flight physical my eyes went bad when I was 24 years old. That ended my dreams of being a pilot. Other assignments that were really good was Fort Kobbe, Panama attached to Howard AFB. The last was a six month TDY deployment to Europe for Reforger mostly Germany, and Netherlands but parts of Belgium and France as well. Riley, Kansas. I was stationed there in 1966. On weekends I would travel to Manhattan and try to intermingle with the students who were attending classes at the University of Kansas. I met a young cheerleader, Betty Friday, who I dated for several months prior to my unit's deployment to Vietnam (9th ID). I have fond memories of Ft. Riley. Although I corresponded with Betty while I was in Vietnam I never saw her again. Ironically, Ft. Riley was my introduction to campus life and academia. I too decided to attend college following my discharge from active duty. Ft. Riley was a significant step in the formative years of my late adolescence. I remember with particular delight the Union Pacific troop extra that transported my battalion from Ft. Riley to Oakland, CA., the port of embarkation for Vietnam. My unit boarded the USS Upshur and I recall thinking about Betty and Ft. Riley as I walked up the gangplank toting my heavy duffle bag on my tired shoulders. I have always planned to revisit Ft. Riley. I still relish moments of nostalgia whenever I reflect on my military experiences and to the best of my recollections, Ft. Riley superseded in importance all the other Army posts I was stationed on.Response by SPC Benjamin Hartog made May 25 at 2016 2:59 PM2016-05-25T14:59:39-04:002016-05-25T14:59:39-04:00PO1 Scott Cottrell1561085

NAS Key WestResponse by PO1 Scott Cottrell made May 25 at 2016 4:09 PM2016-05-25T16:09:05-04:002016-05-25T16:09:05-04:00A1C Lisa Casserly1561175

Comiso Air Station, Sicily, Italy.
