Is there a way to heighten your chances at getting the MOS you want in the Marines?

I know you pick your field (mine will probably be 08xx) but is there a good way to get an exact MOS? I want to become a Fire Support Man (0861) and when do you find out your exact MOS?
*Side note* sorry for being kinda redundant with these questions, I'm just really excited to finally be going active duty.

Be careful. I was told I would be photographer living seaside in a condo. I got 0311 and shipped overseas. Can you believe that s***?

My Infantry OSUT (combined Basic and AIT for you Marines) platoon was literally half Puerto Rican as was my squad. One of the Puerto Ricans in my squad came in out of the field, went to his bunk cussing up a storm and throw crap around his wall locker. While I had learned to curse in Spanish by that time, the reason for the outbreak escaped me. His buddy said he was going on about how the recruiter said that there were swimming pools and tennis courts on post, the weather at Ft Benning, Ga never got below 70 F and we had evenings and weekends off, so when he got back to Puerto Rica, he was going to kill the lying bastard.
I did point out that there were swimming pools and tennis courts on post, but he didn't take comfort in that fact.
Oh, and it gets a hell of a lot colder than 70 in the Winters in Central Georgia.

Unless things have changed since I was on recruiting duty (and that was in the 70's, so they probably have), the Marine Corps doesn't offer specific MOS guarantees.....only a general field. As I was informed by my drill instructor when I requested a change of orders at the end of boot camp (which is when you will find out what your specific MOS will be), the Marine Corps will decide where they need you to go, and what they need you to do. You do have the option of requesting schools and transfers of MOS during the course of your service, but no guarantee it will be honored. If you decide to re-enlist at the end of your tour, you can request a change of MOS as a re-enlistment incentive, and that will be honored. Good luck in training young man.....becoming a Marine will be a proud moment in your life.

Thank you very much, I'm waiting for my DD368 to be sent back from Army HRC and I'll get my ship date asap. I'm pretty excited.

For a CK contract, if I remember correctly, you go in as 0800, and when you graduate MCT and get your orders, you either get 0861, or 0844. So scout, or FDC. I think it's kind of like a flip of a coin. I went in thinking I was going to be a cannoneer the entire time. Sooooo glad I wasn't in the end lol
