A lot of people say to check your DD-214. That's all well and good, but that isn't always accurate.

At least for Navy and Marine Corps members/veterans, there's a website you can check called https://awards.navy.mil. I'm sure there are similar sites for Air Force and Army veterans, maybe even Coast Guard.

I have a question.

If one leaves the military, and afterwards the service awards a ribbon that is new, but, covers what was accomplished while in the military and is awarded to all who accomplish what the ribbon is awarded for, can that ribbon be claimed?

For example, the Air Force has a ribbon for marksmanship. All who have qualified are given this ribbon.

Just curious.

The USMC has the NAVMC 2922. The USMC likely has something similar.

After you get out, there are still "awards in the ether," basically awards that are pending approval. In my case, I meet the requirements for the GWOTS & a NUC (Awarded to MCB Quantico). If you contact "Awards Branch" Air Force, they should be able to sort out those as well.

They'll need a signed letter from you, asking you to research your awards, and the process takes 90-120 days (depending on branch).

If your answer is DD214 you are wrong, especially if 214 was generated after returning from a deployment. The DD214 IS NOT a source document. You CANNOT bring your 214 to your unit and ask them to update your SEB / ERB. If you do and they do, they are wrong. You need orders, an appropriate memo, or the regs. If you find out later that you are due something you can ask for orders or a memo to be created. 214's after deployment are often times cookie cutter documents created by clerks that don't give a shit. If you care...do your homework. The only person looking out for you...is you.

Are we talking things you had annotated in service records at the time you departed and are likely on your 214 or are we talking awards that you may have qualified for after the fact (not uncommon, like Humanitarian Service Medal, Korean a Defense Service Medal, or a new service decoration)?

What SSgt Barry LaMont said. Just go to any American Legion or service office in your community. It is easy, free and takes about six weeks or less to get the DD-214!
