Is there a policy that protects soldiers with use or lose days while in a school environment (e.g. SWCS SF, CA, or PSYOPS)?

Basically NO! The criteria for excess leave are based on law, exceptions are not permitted. See AR 600-8-10 Leaves and Passes, Chapter 3 Special Leave Accrual, for details. TDY for school is not a qualifier.

It is considered the cost of doing business with certain programs. The regulation is very specific on what qualifies, but you are getting some training that you desired and that is a good thing.

The only protection from leave loss is stop loss or extension due to a deployment. I may be out of date, though.

There is a reason why on the beginning of the fiscal year you look at the Use/Lose box on your LES. It tells you how much you have to spend before the next fiscal year.
