Is there a middle ground or are we destined to become a society of left versus right?

I have seen more and more of people who lay claim to being a Republican (AKA conservative, right-wing, etc.) or Democrat (AKA liberal, left-wing, etc.). I have a hard time understanding why people feel the need to identify with a specific political party and will ALWAYS vote that way, regardless of a better idea. What draws someone to identify with either black or white ideologies instead of being politically/ideologically open? Is there a middle ground or are we destined to become a society of left versus right? Why do you choose to affiliate with a particular party?
The inspiration behind this question can be found in the response I received on a similar RP discussion (https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/next-presidential-election?page=3&sort_by=votes&urlhash=)

I just want a stamp that says stupid on it in reverse so they can read it in the mirror and a never ending supply of ink. Each member of congress gets stamped on their foreheads upon arrival to work. Followed by a foam covered aluminum bat to the brain box whenever they start to open their mouths to say something stupid. This would require volunteers to stand behind several members at the ready. Any takers?

I am in. I have a good ash bat that stood the test of time and was never broken in many baseball games I played, so it would be good to knock knots on the heads of politicians who make stupid statements. I am afraid it would get a lot of use. I would be really pissed if I broke it trying to knock sense into a politician. On a serious note, it is important to get the money out of our national elections and that means getting special interests to step down. Until that happens, we will not get the best or brightest to serve the people, but will instead get those stupid enough to sell their souls to the devil called special interests.

I don't affiliate unconditionally...I simply vote for the least worst candidate.

I hear ya on that, SGM! I'm just kind of taken aback by some of the comments I see here on RP that sound like they came out of the book of "Arguing with a (insert enemy party) 101."
Maybe I should just tune it out but nearly every emotionally charged discussion I get involved in seems to involve someone who is a "You're either with me or against me" kind of person.

P.S. I figured I would reword my question a bit. Unconditionally was too strong of a word...
