We went there to prevent terrorists from using it as a base to train for attacks on the United States. Yeah, I know. That mission was accomplished and forgotten long ago. It was replaced with nation building. We tried to build a democracy there. Why? We're not a democracy. What's so great about democracy? Indeed, it's shortcomings have been demonstrated admirably in Iraq where the majority used their new-found power to persecute their minorities which is exactly what any thinking person would expect. No, we are a nation founded on the rule of law. Why didn't we attempted to implant that concept there? Simple. Their concept of law permits pedophilia. Indeed, it encourages it. What do we gain by colonizing these "no-mans land" nations? The only heartening thing about this discussion is that we are all naturally disgusted by pedophilia, the same cannot be said about a lot of behaviors once viewed as equally disturbing in our own Nation. We protect a lot of unsavory folks here at home as well as abroad, and all PME courses now teach us about ethnocentricity, or the "ignorant" belief that our culture is the standard all others should be measured against. Funny we have standards for just about everything we do in the military, to keep us in line and effective, but the ball is being dropped when it comes to moral standards, and that hesitation will continue to grow to a falter and eventually a fail.
