Is the U.S. protecting a nation of pedophiles?

There have been a number of Soldiers who reported the abuse of young boys in a practice called "boy play" among the Police Commanders in Afghanistan. This practice was documented in a 2010 series ran by PBS highlighted the practice known to the Pashtun as Bacha Baza.

The Department of Defense hired AnnaMaria Cardinalli, a social scientist to look into the matter.

Ms. Cardinally, found that the practice of men raping young boys there is common and is reported to be a status symbol among men. It was reported that if a man did not have a boy he could not compete with other men in their social hierarchy i.e. boys are status symbols.

The tradition is reported to have arisen as the result of women being off limits to men because of their strict religious beliefs. Men are not supposed to look at women or speak to them before a proposal for marriage is made. Women are always covered head to toe further hiding them from prying eyes. It is also taught that women are "unclean" because of menstruation. One man who was interviewed asked the interviewer, "How his wife could become pregnant?" after it was explained to him, he reacted in disgust saying, "How could one feel desire to be with a woman, who God has made unclean?" So young boys will dress up as females. "Young boys dress up as girls, wearing makeup and bells on their feet, and dance for a dozen or more leering middle-aged men who throw money at them and then take them home." The practice among men does not stop after marriage. Most men keep boys for their "entertainment".

A recent State Department report called "dancing boys" a "widespread, culturally sanctioned form of male rape."

In Afghanistan the practice of raping young boys has created a culture of pedifiles. A practice passed from generation to generation, as boys aged 9 to 15 are sold by their families to men for their pleasure. These boys more often than not grow up to become pedifiles and the cycle is repeated over and over.

Now the Pentagon is releasing the following statement, " We never had a policy in place that directs any military member, or any government personnel overseas to ignore human rights abuses. Any sexual abuse is completely unacceptable and reprehensible. "

To compound and make this story worse is the path the U.S. Army took to kick out a decorated SFC Charles Martland, after he got in trouble for shoving an Afghan police commander accused of raping a boy and beating up his mother when she reported the incident.

I do recall in some type of training that I took that we are supposed to report cases like this to the authorities. Especially the cases where human trafficking is involved.

It is beyond my comprehension. Soldiers joked about "Man love Thursday" even while in Iraq. We heard from the gate guards 2003-2004 of young boys showing up bleeding from every orifices looking for medical help. When asked what had transpired, they responded with the adult men did this to me? We didn’t want to believe it or thought it could be isolated. I once asked my Terp what was going on and he indicated “for some in our culture, men are for pleasure and women are always for babies”. Turns my stomach that this practice goes overlooked. I only hope that political views and agenda don’t cloud our decision-making.

Let me be very clear because I either didn't state this well before or was completely misunderstood. I am 100% against this practice and it is morally repugnant.

That said, who are we to inflict our morality on another nation? Well, we do in many ways. It's obviously a pretty dangerous and not quite fair parallel, but we step in (or at least we used to) to prevent genocide and other human rights atrocities. The problem is both defining the line, as well as where our authority starts and ends. Should we stand by? No, but we should also not unilaterally impose our justice on another society. We should "encourage" them to do this instead.

The question was whether there was an order for U.S. Soldiers to look the other way when they saw this. I'm told by colleagues that there was such an order, maybe not formally, but informally. The word was put out. It's a tough call. Of course it's a sickening practice from our point of view, but are we the world's morality police? There is probably no good answer.

This is nothing new and it's not an event isolated to Afghanistan. In 1990 during the build up for the Gulf War in Saudi I was the Sergeant of the Guard for a base called Camp 2. As I was marching the guard around the camp changing the guard I saw this young Pakistani boy around 10 running down the street naked with poop running down his legs. There was a Saudi man running after him. Well, of course, I wouldn't give the boy back to him. There was a 2dLt in my chain of command and he didn't have an answer, but contacted a major who came to the scene along with a prince and made me give the boy back. This event in indelibly imprinted in my mind.

I personally think that rape should be considered a capital crime no matter where it is committed. If you executed one of these animals I don't think there should be any ramifications. The only heartening thing about this discussion is that we are all naturally disgusted by pedophilia, the same cannot be said about a lot of behaviors once viewed as equally disturbing in our own Nation. We protect a lot of unsavory folks here at home as well as abroad, and all PME courses now teach us about ethnocentricity, or the "ignorant" belief that our culture is the standard all others should be measured against. First note: The Army relented. Martland continues to serve in the Green Beret.
