I don't think that social media is getting out of hand. I think that if there is a problem, it is that people don't think before they speak/act. In general, social media has helped out in many ways. It allows family members to stay connected with their loved ones over great business, it helps facilitate the spread of information, and it allows people to get in contact with others when they wouldn't be able to do easily any other way. RallyPoint is a form of social media. Granted, it is geared specifically toward the military service member or veteran, but it is still social media none the less. In general, I think that social media has done more good than harm, but some people simply make mistakes. They may be REALLY dumb mistakes, but they are mistakes and we can learn from those mistakes.

I'm starting to think young Soldiers are doing it just to get attention now. Between the Soldier hiding from the flag, Soldiers holding guns up to their heads, Soldiers smoking blunts in uniforms, and several other Soldiers posing and Gang Members. I use Social Media as a mentorship tool. I am very active here on Rally Point, I also us Army Together We Served, and several NCO pages on Facebook. Now because of these younger Soldiers doing crazy things I feel that my Leadership is now pocking around in my personal life. Just recently I had friend request from my Company Commander and some other Battalion Level Officers and NCOs. Know I have nothing to hide but I am starting to think that I might need to post less and stop offering advice to people about certain things. I anybody else in the same feeling?

I understand your frustrations. I am also pretty active here and also over on Facebook. USAREUR just put out some "shotgun" guidance last week about the UCMJ and Social Media. I read it over. I pushed it out to my folks. I am not concerned about it because I do not intend on violating the rules. As long as you are on social media doing the right thing, I would continue to drive on.

SSG Woodard; You have valid points and I understand your concerns, but I agree with MSG Stankovich, we have nothing to worry about as long as we are doing the right thing on Social Media and of course being careful.

I wouldn't treat friend requests as a bad thing. I think of them as other people giving you their business cards or email addresses. It just feels strange because social media is such a new cultural development and our society hasn't found the time yet to adjust.
