Many people have asked me what modeling and simulation analysts, scientist and engineers do in the defense and civil sectors. This brief modeling and simulation portfolio demonstrates some of the modeling and simulation projects I have worked on since retiring from the Army in 2005.

Simulation is regularly used in advanced science, research and development and first time construction projects. The project I'm working on right now is on the 4th iteration of it's HVAC computer modeling. So yes it is used, primarily where it is a new item and there is significant risk in performance.

MAJ (Join to see) Thanks, this is exactly the level of detail I was looking for.

Excellent post. I miss the technological piece of service. I was assigned to SMDC ARSTRAT about 10rs yrs ago and got to see the latest (then) cutting edge stuff with SBIRS and a large swath of space based ISR.

MAJ Keira Brennan, I performed the space surveillance constellation study for SMDC in 2007 using agent-based simulation. Fun stuff!

Flight simulators; law enforcement simulators; sporting goods (archery, fishing, etc) simulators. There are also engineering analysis programs, motion picture ("Star Wars", "Avatar", etc.) production, medical diagnostics, economic modeling/game theory, etc. Lots of applications in civilian life.

Capt Seid Waddell And that was my whole point. Did you click on the linked article? It shows modeling and simulation work I have performed for NASA, FCS, FCI, and others.

LTC Jeffrey Strickland, yes I did. I have been engaged in engineering and product development in the civilian market for over four decades, and I have seen the growth of modeling and simulation work during that time. With the rapidly increasing computing power we have today simulation work is everywhere.
I was responding to the question you asked in the OP.

Thanks, Capt Seid Waddell , I suppose I did not ask the question to evoke the responses I was looking for. I was actually looking for specific projects in which simulation was used effectively. I should perhaps had said, "How is simulation used?" My bad.
