Is reclassifying to 91B a possibility? If so, what is the process?

I was looking into reclassing out of my current mos which is 11b and into 91b, because I’ve come to realize, I only want to serve one enlistment in the military, and I want to have career skills I can use in the civilian world, and when I joined the army, I had the hooah airborne mentality and signed up to be infantry, but I didn’t realize that I wouldn’t be earning very many carryover skills. I’m curious about the criteria for reclassing out of my current mos before my ETS date. I have a total of 8 months of service right now. My mechanic line score was actually my highest at 128 and my GT is 117 if that will help with any answers. Any advice

Best advice is, talk to your training NCO if your in the Guards or Reserves, or talk to your first line supervisor and see what you have to do. If anything you'll just have to go through 91B training.

Since you are only 8 months in it may be pushing it trying to reclass. Talk to your training NCO or retention NCO and see if they have an available slots. If no slot available then you will have to wait til you have more time in service

If you are active duty you need at least 2 years service before they even consider letting you reclass. Even then the job you want has to be in high demand. If you want to reclass you'd be best to serve out one more contract. I was a 91b. Trust me, it's worth getting the time in the MOS. There are a lot of different opportunities out there with the skil set of an army mechanic.

PV2 Private RallyPoint Member At 8 months, changing your MOS now is probably not an option. What you can do now is research and decide what you would envision as a future career. Just because your mechanic line score was high, does not mean that is what you would be happy doing. Also, many former infantry soldiers have led highly successful civilian careers. Consider taking college classes, and strive to be the best 11B in the Army.

The Army doesn't work that way. That's one of those things you should have thought about before entering into a contract. You can always ask. If you don't ask you won't get. Be prepared to get a boot in the a$$ for asking but don't let that deter you. 11B, you can go be a cop!

It is good you are setting goals. You should always have a 5 and 10 year plan. I would not worry to much about trying to change your MOS at this point. You will have your GI Bill to use once you leave the service you can then make a choice on what you want to learn. In the present the military is the only place you can have the job in the infantry. Do your best and take pride in the fact that you are part of Army history.

Your line score would help out greatly to reclass. Your just have to hatch out the details with your reenlistment NCO. You will have better opportunities both in the military and in the civilian sector.

NO, Maybe, NO. 1, What you want is damn immaterial. The needs of the Army will come 1st. The 91b field would have to dying of starvation before DA would normally let someone reclass during an enlistment- normal would be 1yr within ETS, and re-enlisting for the new MOS. Maybe you should have thought more prior to signing up.

As a former 91b. All you have to do is talk to the proper channels. Most of the comments on her must be all 11b because there saying crap like immoral. You have to do what is right for you.

SGM Frazer is right. You need to either finish your first enlistment, or be close enough for re-enlistment to reclass. Only acception is if, like SGM said, they DESPERATELY needed the manpower. If you try and submit it right now they will laugh and deny. That being said. Suck it up, you're a SOLDIER FIRST. You enlisted to fight, so fight. Make it through the enlistment and go again.

I would talk to your retention NCO and ask you should able to but you may have to renelist for at 3 years but its worth it.

91B won't give you much skills when you get out. Civilian wrench time is totally different from the Army. If your at Bragg, there is an OUT program there or it was,basically it gives you time and can help you get your ASE. *Look this up. ASE certifications can help you big time on getting employment when you get out.Wielding is a good trade to learn and easily transfers easily to the civilian world and so does construction mechanics. Hope this helps.

Currently at A.I.T for 91B.
You wont learn anything to help you in the Civilian Field, besides simple bare mechanics. You learn most of your mechanics from your duty station. Coolest thing about 91B is H8

Based on your GT score you might find that being a 915A would be more challenging. Based on your line score a 91H would be most beneficial. You can work on both track and wheeled vehicles as a 91H.

91b will not aid in the civilian world unless you get on board with contractors for the military. You are not viewed as a mechanic only as a parts changer with no training
