The party will want to endorse the candidate they want to endorse, not who the people want to become president. We can see this in the support for Hillary Clinton as opposed to who the people want which is Bernie Sanders (Democratic side). On the Republican end of the spectrum, Trump is not supported by his party, only by the people. I think he is passively supporting Trump through a lukewarm endorsement and without openly helping or harming him. However, I also think he is hoping that Trump implodes and the GOP comes calling for him. That will allow him to become the nominee without having to fight for it, just like how he became the Speaker.
