About $400-600 of what's left is eaten up in fuel, electricity, and water bills. Count on breaking about even most winter months and having a little extra in the summer. I have always appreciated living off post to keep by work and home lives more separate; if you're asking solely from the financial perspective, I'd say it's a wash. I lived one North Pole. When you move out of on base housing you will get hit for thousands of dollars no matter how good the condition is when you leave. Every Soldier I had did. Go to an out processing meeting and listen to everyone complain about paying thousands in statement of charges without damage SFC Private RallyPoint Member Sat, 06 Jan 2018 10:38:12 -0500 2018-01-06T10:38:12-05:00 Response by SPC Todd Hanson made Jan 8 at 2018 6:05 PM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/is-it-worth-living-off-post-at-fort-wainwright?n=3238970&urlhash=3238970

On post housing is your best bet. Whatever money doesn't get used for rent/bills etc you can put towards whatever. I was getting $1500 a month for BAH with rent being $950-then about $1050 4 years later.

You have to be aware that assholes will plug their car in to your electricity post outside. Its annoying as fuck, but a lot of fun leaving at 5:30 and disconnecting their car because they're stealing. In reality all they would have to say is "Hey do you mind if I plug in?" and its a non issue.
