Is it possible to nominate a retired service member for an award for actions as a retiree?

He could be given a civilian award, but not the Soldier's medal, because he was not on active duty when this happened. And I doubt they would retroactively recall him posthumously for this....

I was army so I looked up my services regulation. So, AR 600-8-22, Sect. 3-3, Personnel Eligability, this section actually does not have anything that specifically pertains to retired service members. It does state that certain awards may be given to civilians if signed off by the Secretary of the Army, however these awards are for civilians serving in a combat zone.

I do believe that there are civilian awards that can be issued in this case. I will look them up and get that info to you.

Okay! Finally found it!
The retired service member does qualify for this award. How one goes about putting him in for it I do not know.

Remember, retiree's are still service members, subject to the UCMJ. They aren't civilians. I'm sure it would be complicated, but they're still eligible for military awards.

Approval authority is the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC), 1 Archives Drive, St. Louis, MO 63138–1002. Approval authority for Soldiers who retired or were discharged after 1 October 2002 is Commander, U.S. Army Human Resources Command, Awards and Decorations Branch (AHRC–PDP–A), 1600 Spearhead Division Avenue, Fort Knox, KY 40122–5408.
