It's designed to be mass produced and can be made very simply. It does EXACTLY what it was designed to do.

The AR also does EXACTLY what it was designed to do. The difference is that it's a "fine Swiss clock" in comparison to the AK.

If we made AR's out of steel & wood instead of aluminum and plastic, we'd get an increase in ruggedness. However the tradeoff is A LOT of weight.

Now if we made AK's like we made AR's.... well, there's LOTS of "cheap" AK's out there. It's just harder to make "cheap ARs" (there are polymer receiver ones that work well though).

It's about what we are willing to trade. Do we need all the accuracy (and range) we have? Probably not. Do we need all that much ruggedness? Not when we get them cheap enough. The real advantage however is the modularity features combined with the lightness combined with the cost. The AR gives us A LOT of bang for our buck. The H&K 417 is just that. I've seen the torture tests done with them, and they still shoot accurately, and more accurately than the stock/GI M-16/M-4 after the same treatment.

The Israelis have also done just that with their Galil. They took the best parts of the AK-47 and the FN FAL and made a hybrid weapon that will take whatever beating you can think of, and still fire accurately and reliably.
