Is it normal to be told over the phone (no paperwork or anything) that you are discharged with an other than honorable condition?

Why does the Active Component have the DD214 and the National Guard have the NGB Form 22, but the Army Reserve does not have a form showing service after they got out of the guard. For example, A Reserve Soldier could go to Basic and AIT, they would get a DD214 after training, then spent the next 19 years drilling and then when they retire, there is no form to show how long they spent in the Reserve and what awards and type of discharge/ RE...

You should have received Discharge Orders. While the Reserves do not give DD 214's, they do give Orders of Discharge. I know this because 2 of my Soldiers from my last unit received them when they were discharged. If you received no papers of any kind, I would recommend you get back on the phone and call some people (your 1SG and Commander) to get some answers.

Fairly normal yes, in some cases they don't even bother to call. If you have any TA-50 that you haven't turned in expect it to be collected from your taxes in a year or two, or you could drive to the unit and get a turn in document (you'll need proof) If you want a copy of your discharge orders the unit may be kind enough to print one off for you, if not the VA office can get you a copy.

I would not worry about the phone call, I would worry about the reasons you gave the Army to discharge you under such circumstances.

Why not just call your unit First Sgt, he's the quickest way to figure shit out, and he can move a mountain with a few phone calls if its not at his fingertips. I've never seen anyone that was personally screwed over just to do so, doesn't sound right.

No that's not normal or even legal. There should be a lot of paperwork that a lot of people will sign without reading, but do count on a chapter that you have not seen the paperwork for.

My thoughts are no. There is a process to this. Not to mention the paperwork. I have seen other soldiers having to wait for the paperwork to clear. No calls, just waiting for the release.

If you want you discharge paperwork then go to https://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records and request them.
