Eh... why not. The question of course becomes how much do you care? I'm not defending it or saying it is right. What I am saying though is think of the amount of information we freely give up on the Internet on an almost daily basis.

On social media, people "check-in" to places which tags their geographic location. We post our schedules, vacation plans, plenty of personally identifiable information every time we wish someone a Happy Birthday.

Hell, the majority of the country has a cell phone in their pocket, but how many of them use it to make calls. Typically it's a quick text or facebook message.

Even if they weren't spying on the public as a whole, we reveal enough about ourselves with our internet personas that they'd have a good gauge on our activities anyways.

Time to bust out my tin foil hat. The government has been watching us for a long time. License plate readers at most intersections in the USA, Public Space Cameras, Using a credit card or customer loyalty card, typing information into a search bar. All of this is tracked at some point, by someone. If you're not doing anything illegal, there is no reason for concern. If you are concerned, then you should check yourself and what you're doing.

My home and my office phones were monitored 24/7 when I was the Operations Officer for a Strategic Communications Center. Not only they do a thorough background check on me to obtain a Top Secret/Crypto/SIOP-ESI clearance, they ran one on my new bride. (I wish they had told me about her. It might have saved me a lot of trouble later on.) Awareness of the monitoring bothered me for all of about 30 seconds until it occurred to me that I was going to bore the hell out of whomever was tasked with listening to the minutia of my life. To be fair, it did bear fruit. During one annual security briefing, I heard a tape played of a series of conversations I had in which I repeatedly and desperately attempted to stop a colonel from reading a TS message over the phone (I even hung up on him twice)

Yes, and it has been going on for a very long time. At least the capability has been there for a long time.
The only limitation is the number of analysts available to find anything interesting.

During my civilian career, there was no expectation of privacy as phone calls, emails, internet use were spot monitored, briefcases searched, etc. Even after being told they were being monitored, there were a bunch of folks fired, a lot of them for getting into pornographic websites. I was not doing anything illegal, and did not care except for the random drug tests, which were a pain.

Yes - however today it is being outsourced in a variety of ways. One such way is In Q-Tel.

Can everyone say ECEHELON? "Big Brother" has been listening since at the '60s. The logical evolution of this gave us PRISM, the big NSA scandal that Snowden brought us. Both worked on finding keywords, then looking at the context around those keywords. Not particularly worried about it, though.

The Phone Companies set up the system so they could bill you again and again. It didn't take a lot of modification, they collect everything. Now your appliances are bugged too. At some point one of them will attack the other. Just remember, that Samsung Refrigerator may have been built in North Korea

I believe they are. Whatever is monitored, they are probably looking for key phrases or words etc. However, I don't have a problem with that. I have nothing to hide from anyone. If they want to listen in on me and my wife then all I have to say is that they will be bored to death. The thing is, if they are listening, then legally they can't disclose anything they hear unless it is deemed criminal then it has to be presented to a judge to be able to be used for prosecution. Don't care at all what they listen to with me.
