Is being a platoon sergeant as an additional duty the same as being rated as one?

I am a 91B and an Staff sergeant. Currently they have me as a platoon sergeant but as an additional duty. They dont have platoon sergeant slots. Would this count as being rated as a platoon Sergeant? They are also rating me as a regular mechanic. Their reason why is they dont have enough of an MTOE to support another E-6 in the motorpool. Is there any way I can get out of this unit and into a unit that has space for me?

You should check with your training NCO, or maybe personnel to see what can be done.

I would review the units MTOE, if there are no slots then I would contact your assignment manager to see when the next enlisted manning cycle starts to see if you can be moved or PCS.

Since Platoon Sergeant positions in a company have a Paragraph and Line Number given to them, and your unit apparently doesn't have slots for Platoon Sergeants.....hmmm....

My speculation is that the rating of Platoon Sergeant as an additional duty is warranted, but ONLY if the unit MTOE doesn't have a Paragraph and Line number for Platoon Sergeant.

As for transfer, submit a 4187 request for transfer. It may get approved. It may not. But first, you are going to need to do some research to find a unit that has open space for you. Good luck.

Remember, the bullets on your NCOER tell the story. Whether the Platoon Sergeant gig is MTOE or Additional Duty, if your bullets have the word "Platoon Sergeant" spread throughout, it's apparent that you're doing the duty. Big Army understands that not all units have identical slots.

Have you seen the Unit's MTOE?
While you may feel as it sucks, you will still need some PSG time prior to becoming a 1SG (since we are thinking levels up) this opportunity may put tools in your kit-bag that'll give you an advantage over your peers. Furthermore, this is an opportunity to learn how to balance and prioritize admin actions and turning wrenches. Also, the more you get promoted, the less wrench-turning you'll do. There is sound advice in the other comments but you should also take it into stride. You are still learning....
Lastly- is there a mechanic slot you are trying to get in the motorpool or do you just want to be down there? Do you intend to get a position in order to submit a packet?

Back in Korea circa 2009-2010 (give it or take) I was a 91B, a Specialist, a platoon sergeant and the Orderly Room NCOIC (all that at the same time) and did my job without complaining. In fact best gig ever.
