US Title 10 Sect 633 states O5s must retire after 28 YOS. US Title 10 Sect 1251 says mandatory retirement age is age 62 for all officers other than general or flag officers. If you have 20 or more qualifying “good” years you qualify for the reserve retirement at age 60 if you started at age 36...unless you have a break in service not mentioned.
I had a CSM in one command that figured he’d make more money as a traditional Reservist rather than a AD AGR so he went off AGR tour with less than two years until turning 60 he’s now drawing way better monthly pay .Response by LTC John Mohor made Jul 17 at 2021 10:18 PM2021-07-17T22:18:39-04:002021-07-17T22:18:39-04:00CAPT Kevin B.7116796

These references are not dependant on each other. If you are an O5, and not on a promotion list, you're gone at year 28 regardless of age. If you are 62 years of age, you're gone regardless unless some special circumstances. If you are 60 in the Reserves or Retired Reserve, you can start drawing retirement. No reason to wait. Re: the "draw more money" aspect. If you buy retirement in the Civil Service under FERS, the additional years you buy gives you a bump in that retirement. That bump when added to a Reserve retirement can be more than some other combination AD/Reserve bottom lines. I bought 10 years of CS retirement for $10K (dating myself). That made my 32 year CS retirement annuity a 42 year one. I get $18K more a year just in the annuity piece. That was the biggest no brainer to do. Second biggest no brainer was doing at least 5% in TSP. You make 100% on the deposit every payday. After that, it's in whatever growth mix you've chosen.Response by CAPT Kevin B. made Jul 18 at 2021 3:39 PM2021-07-18T15:39:09-04:002021-07-18T15:39:09-04:002021-07-17T11:37:03-04:00
