In your opinion, what factors lead to this type of situation?

What factors led to his cancer or what led to the fact this country requires people who have devastating illnesses to basically rely on the kindness of strangers to stay alive? Not sure about the first one, but as to the second, we have never really embraced the idea of universal health care and adequate safety nets for people in need. Yes, FDR moved the nation to Social Security and LBJ moved the nation to Medicare and Medicaid. But we are still fighting to get a single payer universal health care system. My next guess for this teacher, he will be filing for bankruptcy in order to get out of the crushing debt for his treatment.

Just me; but how would the employer account for the guys time away from work if not for providing paid sick days and a means for peers to donate sick days for their buddies in need of it.... Just not pay him for the missed time like in the old days.
Or is this a lead in for the universal wage crap. Why bother working you'll get X$ just for breathing paid by taxing everyone including yourself at a high rate.
On a positive note it's awesome his buddies / co-workers donated sick leave to help him out.

In my opinion, in this case, compassion and charitable giving came from where it SHOULD have the hearts and minds of private citizens. Who cannot remember a time they saw someone take advantage of the system? I cannot for the life of me understand a battle cry of "There ought to be a law."
